OK, I can't find any info on this.

I was told not to put a fridge in an unheated garage. I was told that after about '96 all new refridgerators started using a gel coolant and if it freezes requently it renders the unit useless after 2-4 years.

Anyone heard of this?

The only thing it does it make it work harder. Most refrigerators use 134a refrigerant. Which you will find in all production cars and other products including your a/c unit.

I got 2 of them in my garage along with a chest freezer. Never had any problems from them.....of course they are all hooked up to temp controllers so that I control the temp in them for storing, aging, and fermenting beer so they dont run constantly.

Maybe I am missing something, but can't you just unplug it and open the door if the refrigerant is in danger of freezing? I unplug my small fridge in the garage all week, then plug it it Friday morning.

I have that problem occasionally,what sucks is how quickly the bodies spoil when the freezer defrosts. Oh well time to stock up again

No probs here Mr.P. Have a '97 Frigidaire, it has seen 15 deg. to 110 in the garage. Carpeted, sheetrocked, painted, but not insulted.

i have a 53 foot by 8 1/2 foot reeefer that has 134a in it and it runs great below zero while going down the road at 70 plus mph

Lizking, I've heard it's better to leave a frige running all the time so it doesn't develop leaks in the lines. They don't use much electricity. Starting and stopping it isn't good for it in the long run, unless the frige is at a hunting or fishing camp, I'd leave it running.

Sorry. I meant if it gets down to 10 degrees in my garage, the refrigerant will freeze.

I am still unable to find any more info on this. It could be that the person that told me is just a loonie.

It hit -10 actual this past winter up here, My beers are still cold. I have a little dorm fridge on my large parts cabinet. I also have R-13 on all of the walls and panelled it, I should have just sheetrocked the fugger.
