Totally freaked me out
« on: July 27, 2005, 07:52:38 PM »
Not much bothers me at work.  Sure I get startled by things but nothing really bothers me
I've come across bee hives, Wasp nests, Even came across a hornets nest once.
Had customers dogs that didn't like me including one Boxer that made it perfectly clear that if he could ever get me he was gonna eat me.
I've seen hoards of roaches, termites, Ticks, and even got my clothes infested with fleas once.
One time while working on some trim I had a bat fly out from behind it and that startled me pretty good.

This time was a true first though.
While working on the trim near the peak of a house a flippen bat flew out and actually landed on my shoulder next to my neck and stayed there.

WHOA! did the ol shimmy & shake and flung him off with the back of my hand. Freaked me out so much I was shaking and my heart was racing for like 10 minutes.

One thing I learned though.  As it was nestled along side the side if my neck. Bats, are quite warm and furry. and as an afterthought it wasn't at all an unpleasant feeling. I just wasn't expecting it so it kinda weirded me out.

Not sure I'd want to experience it again though LOL

Did it do the eerie 'clicking' sound?  I used to be an exterminator.  I have experienced much of what you wrote about to some degree...

No it just sat there. Or at least I didnt notice it making any noise
Whole episide couldnt have lasted more then a few seconds. Guess I didnt give it a chance to.

Tell me. I seem to remember reading that most common bats dont possess the jaw stregnth to break skin as they are primarily designed to eat very small bugs like mosquitos.
Is this true?

Don't know about jaw strength, Vampire ats have a "straw" tounge which they use to suck the blood after breaking skin with their teeth so they might possess the strength.  Couldn't be that bad anyway, they have little mouths.  Who had the Bat Signal on by the way?

LOL!! Whotta picture!

I was under the house once.. a crawl space, trying to get to the underside of the bathroom floor to fix a plumbing problem. Botton of the floor's about 6" from my nose... turned on the flashlight and the entire underside of that wet floor was covered with spiders..

AGGGGGGHHHHHHGGGGHHHH!!!!!

I was out from under the house and at the bottom of the pool in less than 5 seconds.

Yah know, I scream like a girl under water too..

Similar story as Hang's....was crawling under the crawlspace in the very back part looking for a can of paint I had stored back there.  As I was rummaging around a box I pulled a tarp back, and lo and behold a very large black snake drops not a foot in front of me.  Now, I'm not the smallest guy(6'3") so I am still amazed to this day how quickly I scuffled back to the entrance, fully expecting the snake to be right in tow.  I ran nearly 10 yds away from the house just to get away.  I generally hate snakes in general so my heart was on the verge of exploding.

I gathered my courage, picked up a hoe and proceeded to go in and wack the crap out of the thing.  It got away somehow under the house.  I gave up and went to bed that night half awake, paranoid at the fact the big guy could be crawling up the air vent any minute.  The next day, it was like going back into the lion's den.  I wacked everything I saw that looked slightly serpentine like(cable cords, garden hoses :lol ).  Finally, I found him wounded on top of a box and quickly scooped him into a box I had, repeating the quick dash I had made before.

As scared as I was, I just couldn't justify killing him if I didn't have to.  So I jumped in the car and drove down the road. When I let him out after driving a couple miles up the road, he went slithering like all get out.  I'm just glad he didnt decide to get out of the box on the ride.;)

When I was eleven it was my responsibility to take out the garbage from the metal shed we had and put it on the curb every week.  One week in the middle of summer I forgot to do it.  So the next week rolls around and I open up the shed doors.  I notice there are seeds on the floor shaking in the wind and the wind was making the bags russle, of course I then realise there was no damn wind and the were freaking maggots everwhere.  The garbage bags were pulsating with them.  I think I peed my pants six times.  I freak out and get my older sitter to help me triple bag them, and then we unleashed full scale chemical warfare on those little bastards left in shed.  Ovencleaner, Raid, you name we fried those suckers with it.  I think to this day that shed may be the most toxic structure in Ontario.
