Anyone else OD'd on Op Flashpoint?
« on: June 23, 2001, 07:59:00 AM »
I got to bed at 5am last night. Almost got divorced over it.

So far I been for a ride in a M1, M113, UH60, lotsa trucks, lotsa jeeps, a boat. Anyone else having an awesome experience like I am with this game?

The squad combat is freakin amazing. I love picking up dead-soviet's RPGs  :D

Anyone else done the tank-ambush (with mines and rpgs)? Crept out of the forest to the evac point? Or flipped the T-80s with the satchel charges? Or taken the village with attack-helo support? or or... aw toejam man theres too much  :)

I want those codemaster guys to bear my children! They're brilliant!

(ww2ol cheerleaders go sit in the corner with your early 90's graphics, 512Mb of RAM, slow loading, and lack of variety).

I thought about ordering it, but ever since I've experienced multiplayer, single-player games hold no interest for me, even if they are groundbreaking.  I got tired of the OFP demo..I really did, even with all the mission mods put out.  Something is really lost without other humans in the arena.

And whats the big deal comparing WW2ol to ofp? I don't see them anywhere near competing with each other. Last time I checked, OFP wasn't WW2.  I can't imagine any WW2 buff replacing WW2OL with OFP.  I say own both.  It's like, uhm.. saying Tetris 20001 will be the death of Aces High.

Vulcon,

Last week, on the official OPF page, they said we Americans could order the Europian version on Jun22. Had the visa card out last night, went to OPF page, link down. Will keep trying though.

How is the multiplay ?

Staga, from what I understand, 8 ppl can command 12 AL soliders each, or, 32 play as 1st person. Unknown if Codemasters plan to charge for their servers or we set up our own connections.

Huh?... lordy with logic like that its mightly hard to debate you  :)

Does ww2ol allow you to design missions? I plan to design missions with cut scenes that'll make you have goosebumps.

Days before the big battle the highways are jammed with civilian traffic Your job the first couple of missions is to play peacekeeper.Another cut scene with Aerosmith's "Train keep a rollin' all night long" in the background, President Reagan on T.V. "We will not let this stand!" During the instramental of that song, we see the warthogs spooling up, choppers overhead, radio chatter. Much actitiy on the base...

You can't see that?

I used to love making the cut scenes for Jane's WW2 fighters.. one of them is 90 minutes long.

OPF will allow me to change the music, closeup shots of the officers planning their mission, fade outs, you name it. My daughter's boyfriends have already volenteered to be the voices of young soldiers.

I already writing the script which is more a statement of the shear MADNESS of war, and what happens if you don't avoid it.

Heh you WW2 guys just don't get it. Theres no magic targeting in OFP. Weapons are a bit better (and you can pick them up from dead soldiers). But the gameplay is relatively the same between this and a WW2 environment (I won't say WW2OL because IMHO it doesn't hold a candle to OFP).

Last night I was doing a black-ops mission, but instead of sneaking into a base I thought stuff it. Using my silenced HK I managed to pop a BMP crew, jumped in the BMP and went for a drive. Now the magic thing about OFP is that as long as you keep your head in the Soviets won't touch your BMP, unless that is you start firing at the them.

So I trundled this BMP to a ridge above the base, jumped into the gunners position and let loose the dogs of war. Base was a friggin mess a short time later. BUT I left a Mi-? Hip Helo untouched (screw walking to the rendevous). I went down, jumped in, and took off towards the rendevous. Some handsomehunk NATO guys took a few shots at me, so I set it down behind some trees and walked the last 200 yards  :)

Its nice to have a fast, hot looking graphics engine. Its nice to be able to get in and out of vehicles (and drive them). Its nice to pick up dead-corpses weapons.

Get the picture fscott?

Vulcan,

Still missing the fun with more players than couple dozen..
WWII OL still has interested with its bigger theatre of operations and more dynamic battles.

but, both games has good and bad side.
Anyhow, these both games will be also found from my game collection.

(so whats the friggin problem? I like both!)

Fishu when WW2OL matures with good graphics without 512Mb of RAM; all the features its supposed to have; better loading times; better control setup... I'll be there. But so far its been nothing but a big disappointment to me.

True, and OFP isn't what fishu and fscott want.  They don't want just 32 players in their world, they want 100's or 1000's.  Big difference there.

For me, I'm not interested in modern combat games.  I prefer the WWII era.

Now, this in no way, shape or form says or insinuates that OFP is a bad game, or not a fun game for people other than me!  I mean, look at Diablo, Half-Life and Quake.  All these are good games that a LOT of people enjoy.  I don't like any of 'em!  Same principle of hating the Yankees, so you say "the Yankees suck!!"  Yeah, they really suck, they've won how many World Series since 1996???  They're a good team, but I still hate 'em!  This isn't for any one person in particular, just everyone who's getting a little bit too entrenched in this "this game is better than that game, your game sucks" stuff.

Been playin OFP tonight, and it IS fun. But I have to disagree in some respects to Vulcan. Man, is it arcade-like. The infantry aspect isn't bad - some nice innvoations. But the vehicles are really arcadey. And the air units are - well - pretty laughable as far as realism goes.

That's fine, tho - there's fun there. Haven't tried multi, but I suspect it will be much like similar games of the genre, bogs down with more than a dozen folks in view.

I hate sounding like a cheerleader - but seeing OFP makes me really appreciate the attention to realism in WW2OL, even if it's rougher than a cheese grater at the moment.

I wish you could take the WW2OL battlefield, arena, netplay and ground units; the planes from WB/AH; and the OFP interface, mission planner, and deformable cover.  objects.  Then you'd have the holy grail, IMHO.
