Bah.. you miss the point entirely, you must be a young-un. When you get to be over the hill like a lot of us you'll find the higher you set the rez the harder to make out what's on the screen.
After I read your post I set my rez to 1280x1024, everything was far too small for me to see and the cockpits still looked the same, hard to make out.
In Air Warrior the cockpits were non-functional and all the guages, speed, alt etc., were across the bottom of your screen in nice bright white lettering on black. I'm not saying we need to go back to ancient ways but I think the "no realistic cockpit" option would be good. Even if it were the same guages but without the pseudo-glass covers and with contrasting bright white markings
