I gotta buy a frigging cow...how much are they?
« on: August 01, 2005, 04:34:06 PM »
My kids drink milk.....ALOT of milk.

On Saturday I bought three large cartons and today my wife called me to bring home some milk because we are out.

I wonder what the economics of owning a cow vs. buying milk would be.
Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain that is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain

Fresh milk taste would certainly surprise you.

We go through 5 gallons a week, just 3 of us (wife doesn't drink milk)

You dont drink it strait from the cow warm. You gotta make it real cold first, then drink it, some of the best milk Ive ever tasted.

You want to get up at 4 am every day and milk her? Then again every afternoon? And I mean every day, 7 days a week.

You’re also going to have to breed her once a year. Which means you need a bull or some alternative. And you have to do something with the calves.

You will also need a pasture and a barn. And feed. And hay in the winter. Also be prepared to assist with any calving problems and illnesses, which by law can only happen at 2am.

Do it for about 2 years and I bet you won’t ever complain about the price of milk again. :)

2 years? I'd give him a week, at best. :)

At least your cows waited for you to get some sleep!  When we went up to the farm, all cow problems happened right after you got comfortable and started dozing off in your bed.

not to mention the feed/grazing.  I don't think it would economically add up.

Don't milk the cow, just plug the kids in. :D

U better treat the milk before u drink it. I was actually raised with milk out of the cow, and surprisely failed to be sick. I miss the taste of the fresh cow milk before all the treatments.

Since I arrived in USA, my milk consumption went way down due to the nutered flavor.:(

Have to agree, after the process its flavor is reduced greatly, even tho the possibility of getting sick is there.
