Best place to keep handgun in car?
« on: August 02, 2005, 09:27:41 PM »
First of all I have my carry permit so all this is nice and legal.

Second, where should I keep my handgun in my car so that I can reach it but nobody else (say someone breaking into my car) can? I keep it locked in the glove box right now but that doesn't do me much good if I need it when the car is running, since the only way to unlock it is with the key that is in the ignition. I was thinking of putting it in the console between the driver and passenger seat but my fear is that if my car is broken into the console (which opens and closes but doesn't lock) will be the first thing a thief would look in. Any thoughts from people with experience in this department?

The best place to keep a handgun in a car is at home in a gunsafe.

If you need a gun while you're out, keep it on your person.  There's no way you can effectively control access to it in your car.  If someone takes your car, they get a gun.

I don't think you should leave the gun in the car, take it with you. Problem solved.

The trunk when you aren't in the car, the center console when you are.  The best place, of course, is your gunsafe.

The law here requires it to be ON YOU, unless you go into a place that sells and serves alcoholic beverages. In the car unattended, it is best kept locked in the trunk in a locked box.

Get a Tank for a car.

Then the 'car' IS the gun.

If you're not going to carry it, don't bring it with you.

Definitely keep it on your person. If you can't carry it into an establishment, get a small gunsafe and bolt it inside the trunk. They make some that have fingertip combinations that allow you quick access but still provide adequate security.

I have a holster attached to the underside of the drivers seat.  I am not aloud to carry mine into were I work, work for the state, so that's the best place for me, plus it's easy to reach in a hurry if I need to use it.

Wish I could use my own gun when at work but the state makes us use their firearms instead.   :(

Admiral, unless you're a business man who's on the road alot, or traveling with your family great distances, I wouldn't keep it in my vehicle if I were you.

Personally, I keep mine under the center fold-down console jump seat in my truck when on vacation, traveling abroad. Its easily accessible, and I don't leave it in the truck except for refueling. I put it inside the Truck camper once at our destination, inside a false wall (that also crosses as a liquer storage area for bringing more booze than whats allowed, back over the border from Canada. :D )

Right up on the dash beside the spare clips. No room on center console...thats where the Molotovs go.

Keep it on you.
If you are going someplace where you cannot take it, leave it home in a safe. If you are going someplace where alochol is being served and you are imbibing definitely leave it home. There is no such thing as a secure spot in a car including in a safe. As long as the car can be easily stolen or broken into, and that covers all of them except for the specialty security cars,, the weapon should not be left in it unattended.

Number one priority in having a weapon is using it only when needed to protect your life. Number 2 is making sure no one else gets it. If that makes it "incoinvenient" too bad, do not leave it where it can be stolen either for itself or as a bonus when your car gets boosted.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."
