I dont think there are any MkVIIs in the US. The earliest model in the States would be the U-505 in Chicago and its a MkIX.

There are plenty of MKXX through MK48s on display in Pearl Harbor, right next to the Arizona memorial museum.

Torpedoes, that is.  :D  Great stuff, you can sit on a MK48 ADCAP, make pinging noises, then yell 'you arrogant ass, you've killed us!' before throwing yourself to the ground and rolling around screaming.

Always good for a larf before security bundles you off.

Dinger, I could be wrong, but I believe in Das Boot they are attacked while passing through the Straights of Gibraltar and so badly damaged that they have to return to Cherbourg. On arriving at Cherbourg they are again bombed and sunk before they can get the U-boat into the Pen.

They stop and rearm before they try to go through the Straight.  I think it was a base in Spain...the Atlantic side.

... They were attacked at Gibraltar, and dove to the bottom. Stuck at the bottom a bit, then they made it back to the surface, and continued (it would have been worse going back -- remember the current is west-to-east). They pulled in to la spezia (which was the same set as used for Brest, so it looked identical) and got bombed there by stock-footage mossies. They did not go back around to Cherbourg.

Mossies?  Haven't seen it for awhile but thought it was P47s or something like that?  I'm in the mood to watch it again now! :)  Maybe later in the week!

No it didn't. And neither were they trying to get to Cherbourg. The U96 had departed from La Rochelle on the Bay of Biscay, France, for duty in the Atlantic. When returning from the Atlantic, U96 is heading back to La Rochelle but receives new orders to proceed to La Spezia, picking up supplies and fuel en route at Vigo, Spain. This is the scene where the U96 officers have a buffet meal with the officers on the SS Weser. After that, they attempt to pass the strait of Gibraltar to get to La Spezia. That's when they came under air attack and, with a damaged bow plane, ended up on the bottom.

Once they managed to complete repairs, the captain decides that with as much damage as they have, they will return to La Rochelle instead of going to La Spezia.

Hmm it's hard to say... actually looks something like a T-6... low wing, radial engine, but not so eccentric as to look like a P-47. In any case, it was a model...

If you liked the movie, I suggest you to read 'Sharks and little fish', a novel by a WWII german submariner named Wolfgang Ott. Griping and impressive.

Hi Daniel!

I've got WinDVD5, which allowed me to extract the following screenshots to help identify the planes.

You couldn't help but feel sorry for them.
The dash through the Straits of Gibralter, getting shelled and depth charged, sitting on the bottom doing repairs.

Finally struggling back into port to almost immediately have it bombed.
