Was it the directors cut? I have that on DVD and it was well worth the purchse. The film still holds up very well in all areas over the years.

Yeah he is a great actor, make Sean Connery look like a Hack.

Besides without this movie, Americans might doubt that we captured the enigma machine to break the codes!

The brits are always taking credit for our stuff.

Did they show it in German with English subtitles?  Always adds to the realism.  Fantastic film!  BTW  The U-Boat used in Das Boot is about 5 miles from where I live in the Bavarian studios.  I keep meaning to go and check it out because, apparently, it's a full mock up!

Yes German with english subtitles. Always adds to it when the Captian is on the tower running Gibraltar yealling "Sneil!" as shells explode around him.

If you're interested in seeing the real thing, we have the U-505 in Chicago at the Museum of Science and Industry.  A bit of a trip for you, though...

That's a bit too far! ;)

They have U-995, U-2540 in Germany, and U-534 back home in England (Birkenhead) which would be easier to get to.

Incidently, here's a link to U-96 mockup used in Das Boot.

Is the U2540 one of the mark 21 boats?   That would be worth seeing.

Yes it is.  See here and gallery here.  Sure looks a beaut!

Also, three more Mk21s in Hamburg.

Good U-Boat website here.
