Believe what you want, but Windows XP is perfectly able to run WITHOUT ANY OF THOSE THINGS CHECKED.

Sure it is BUT.... Without a firewall  you leave your system vulnerable to hackers and prying eyes!. Without an anti virus enables if you happen to close the game and open an email you run a very high risk of getting a virus. In the thre years I worked for Dell I have seen this happen more times than I care to mention and have had to listen to people whine about them having their system hijacked or infected with no telling how many worms. The final option of whether or not to leave your A/V or Firewall running is up to you.

That sounds like what I am looking for.

That old link will not get to the most current version that I am using.  This is one of several that will -

Get your running processes under 20 and you shouldn't worry about lost cycles or consumed memory. I've had mine as lean as 15 running processes and been stable, but the difference between 15 services/processes and 20 is negligible (as long as they aint 3rd party TSRs or other crap) at best. I've also seen a system run AH2 just fine with 50 processes running too, so YMMV.

Edit:
MSCONFIG is a free tool built-in for Windows, and it is worth every penny, a great free tool for troubleshooting a machine that is not booting correctly. But for tweaking a box I greatly prefer this tool:

As long as you stick to the default screen you can't get yourself into TOO much trouble. SOme of the advanced features can definitely ruin an install and require reload though...so be careful.
