It must have been divine intervention or something .......

My work schedule has conspired to have me driving from Seattle to LA this week so, to get a bit of pleasure out of it I've decided to do a bit of Hwy 101 down the Oregon Coast. Time is somewhat limited and so I browsed the maps for what looked like a good route. Picked it out - off I5 at Portland and down 99W and Route 18 to pick up 101......

I'm driving along 18 when there's a sign saying "Spruce Goose" .... eh ????

And a few miles further there it was - Evergreen Air Museum - I'd never heard of it !!!!

And there she was .....

What an absolutely fantastic museum ! It's only small but clean airy and new and everything is displayed superbly. The SR71 is shown fantastically with en equipment bay open, a selection of sensors and a wing lifted for an engine change.
The P38 is beautiful.

I only had 45 mins before closing but what a 45 mins.

Of course the Spruce Goose is incredible and in fantastic condition.

WTG Evergreen. It should be on every aviation buffs list.

That is a very nice museum I was there last month, they have a 109, a spit, a corsair, and a B17, and more.plus a bunch of newer stuff.

Last week I got to visit the musuem of flight in seattle, the WW2 and WW1 exhibits alone are worth going there for.
I finally got to see all those planes I never got to see in mesa, even though once a week i would contemplate ditching work for a couple of hours and seeing them.

Sorry Furbie I didn't pay much attention - at that point I was looking up going "cor bugger that's BIG" . According to the sheet it's a Camel replica.

Pooh - yes the Boeing museum is nice (I was there two weeks ago) but I think the Evergreen one presents it's exhibits better, for instance they give a detailed history for the individual aircraft you're looking at and every aircraft has something extra to see (a panel open, munitions etc). The volunteer staff at Evergreen were superb. The thing that amazed me at the Boeing museum was the state that the #1 747 and #1 737 were in ! They were terrible and such significant aircraft, a real shame.

I sorta rememer the bi-plane being a cutaway of a Jenny, but it might have been a camel.

The amazing part of the Evergreen Museum is the B-17 sitting under the tail of the Spruce Goose. It looks like a cessna.

on your way home stick on 101 all the way north. when you are almost to Tilamook look for the old WW2 anti-submarine blimp hangar to your right and check out the Tilamook air museum.

it's not as new or well lighted as the evergreen but they have some nice planes in there and the building is part of the exhibit.

if you take 99 south out of fresno there is an airport with a B17 and F4 Phantom as gate guards. never new how small a 17 really was.

Nice picture.

When I was there one of the staff told me that the wing is hollow and the wingroot is tall enough to stand in. It was built so that the engines could be serviced while in flight.

It's a great display but a real shame you can't tour the flight deck.

The wing root is easily high enough to stand in. When I was there they had a phantom parked under the tail - the F4 is not a small plane but it was tiny by comparison !!

This was taken with a very wide angle lens so it doesn't really do it justice ....
