What do you use for throttle if you're using the keypad for views?
On/off?

Does the gunsight float like it does without trackIR?  In otherwords, does it stay in the center-point of the screen, or does it stay centered in the sight-glass?  I am just not clear on this.

>Balsy<
Could you explain a little about the flying into a view?  I am sure it will make more sense when I get it, but I'd like to know what to expect.

>Furball<
What exactly was it about the TrackIR that made you feel like you were at a disadvantage?

I can answer these! :)

Gunsite float: The gunsite it's self doesn't "know" you have track IR; so it behaves as you're used to. However; what's very different is that normaly; without track IR; your monitor shows the gun site centre screen. However; with Track IR; what ever you're looking at is center screen; so here's what happens to a new track IR user: you look at bandit; bandit is center screen. You fly the gunsite onto the target. In the begining it takes a concious effort to look at the site; not the bandit; and at first you'll over correct; especialy in the heat of battle. To experiment; try enebling padlock offline; because the feeling is similar.

Flying into a view: Again, 5 minutes experimentation with padlock view; on or off line; will make this statement self explanatory. You can think of padlock as a sort of "automatic; uncontrolled" track IR; inasmuch as it gives a similar effect; especialy in the gunsite view.

Disadvantage: It really takes some getting used to; and in the beggining it's really frustrating as you have to learn to look all over again; and you not only die a lot; but miss easy shots you KNOW you'd have got with out it. If you're proud of your "status" right now; then it's hard to flounder like a noob for a couple of weeks.

But let me add a comment:

HTC is obviously so convinced over Track IR they've hard coded TrackIR set up into the game; so you don't even need the track IR software as AH supports Track IR comands natively (check under clipboard/set up/key mapping; it's all there under "tracker"); although using the Track IR software is a bit easier and allows you to set up profiles for different games.

Additionaly; every single flight sim (and most racing sims) under development that I know of supports track IR to a greater or lesser degree.

But let's be real for a second: Track IR won't make you a killer any more than a $1000 joystick will. But it won't make you any worse; makes the few kills you do get easier (once you've adjusted) and at least doubles the immersion. All these guys whining about the new cockpit gauges being unreadable? Track IR users just lean forward and look a little closer; just as you'd expect :)O

Blammo,

This site stays in the center of the screen.`

Noticed you have CH gear too... you will have to reconfigure you CH commands now that you have freed up all those hat switches.

Let me know if you would like my CH profile to peak at.

Hi,

Basically, i dont give a damn about this 'immersion' mumbo jumbo - its a game and i like killing things.  I dont sit there in my biggles hat pretending i am a pilot. The way i look at it, my SA is far better by using the hat mode on my joystick with views set to instant as i can change views much quicker with my thumb than moving my head.

Therefore, using TrackIR i felt it was more of a disadvantage than an advantage in Aces High.  It does however kick arse in IL2 (makes a huuuuuuuuuge difference) and MS FS.

Dont let me put you off buying it as it is a nice toy, but if you have the same outlook on things as me then you may not have it plugged in for very long.
I am not ashamed to confess that I am ignorant of what I do not know.

Like Furball and a few others I have one that is gathering dust also.

Just could NOT get used to it.

I'd really like to see your profile, if you don't mind Balsy.  Thank you.  Just send it to rtippin@bellsouth.net.

I use the same set up as StarOfAfrica for the same reason - absolutely second nature.  The throttle is the wheel on the joystick base to the left of the stick.  Old School.  :)

I saw that they have a old type tracker and  1 or 2 new types or versions of the tracker.   Read that the new version is supposed to be way different (better) then the old version as far as set up and how it fuctions .   What types you guys have?

The newer one was a bit more expensive by a few dollars ( what aint ,duh).  I think the one blammo has the newer type, anyone else have the newer version?

They have version 1/2/3 out, as well as a "pro" version with higher resolution, the Vector expansion (the optional part that allows 6 axis of movement not just 4) is only supported on version three.

Ive got a review and desription at the link at the bottom of my sig.  Ive had no issues with getting motion sick.  I find that  I generally only get motion sick with certain 3d engines.  Flight sims generally dont make people sick because you arnt in closed spaces with wildly moving walls and ceilings.

Check out my review!

To practice "flying" the gunsight onto the target press TAB then F11 I believe.  I really don't like it, too much possibility of hitting the ground while looking at the target.  May be good for you though, just my opinion.

Well, it came in today!!!  All I can say is, WOW!!!  (for several reasons).

First, I never realized how much I move my head around.

Next, I couldn't even imagine how nice it would be to not have to use the hat switch.  I can still use it by disabling the TrackIR on the fly, but it is nice to not have to use my tumb all of the time.

Finally (for now), it is a bit of a curve to learn to use properly.  I am sure over time it will get better.  I am already pretty sold on it.  It's kind of like when I went from dial up to DSL.

Anyway, Balsy, I got the files and thank you!  It is really helping me.

Thanks to Seeker and everyone else.  I am sure I will have more questions in the near future.  If you watch me auger into the ground or miss easy shots, you'll know why...lol.
