Map a button on your joystick to zoom. Then your guages will be available at a realistic view distance.

Making things bigger does not always make them easier to see though.  Kind of like how making things louder does not always make it easier to hear.

Although not for everyone, play with your FOV setting in the Video setting section on the opening page when you first start AH.  Mine starts with an auto setting of 106 but lowering to 100 makes a nice difference.

Also move your head position forward.  You might even find a better view front and rear as well as an easier to read instrument panel.

I still use zoom on some of the bombers.
