Any ideas what this is?
« on: August 15, 2005, 06:58:45 PM »
Hello there,

I have a puzzle maybe you can help with. I purchased these at a recent estate auction. Even the auctioneer had no idea what they were. Perhaps someone out there knows something about them.

The leather parts 3 & ½ inches long by 2 inches across. There are two flowers impressed in the front. The back is stitched together with just enough room for a pencil to slide through.

The weights or hooks are 1 inch long.

These two items may have nothing to do with each other, but they were in the same old bag when I bought them.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Very rare and primitive athletic cups. The hook was used to hold them in place, there is a hole...well, I think you can use your imagination.

Anyway, this was when football was at its finest, they wore leather helmuts, minimal pads, leather athletic protection (pictured) and they walked to school 5 miles each way, in a snowstorm...UPHILL BOTH WAYS!

Seriously though, whats the diameter of the loop at the end of it? I would guess its some sort of home-made crop (the end, without the handle) for a horse.

I knew a retired meatcutter who had the orthopedic surgeons give him back his hip joint after the replacement -- and he made a cane out of it too. Rested his hand right on the knob of his very own femoral head...

I'm thinking this whole thing is a rigging system for a large tent.

The hook things are for the tightening of guy ropes.  You could run a line thru and tie the end of a line in the hole, then use the hook part as pulley in a block and tackle type of arrangement.  A taught line hitch finishes it off.

The apple looking things are reinforcements for where two poles come together.  The socket holds the vertical pole, the two leafs wrap around the horizontal.  Then the poles are lashed together.

Antique curtain tie back rope ends and curtain hooks.

DUH, you put ice cream in them and the hooks are to hang the ice cream holders on your belt for ready-made ice cream holding.
