Winging it! Aluminum shading feedback requested
« on: August 15, 2005, 11:40:36 PM »
this is the wing of my P-51D Big Beautiful Doll. ammo hatch doors and aileron and fuel cap not shaded yet but rest of wing is.

I tried to make everything very subdued to blend together. should I make it more contrasting and pronounced with heavier shading or is this more realistic subtle like it presently is?

first time trying metal effects so any help is welcome.

One thing about the mustangs wings is they were painted with yellow chromate and silver paint. The only natural metal on the wings were the flaps and ailerons.

hehe will just have to make the ailerons look more like aluminum then! :) looking at that wing again it dosnt quite look aluminum to me yet but it does pass the mustard as aluminum paint :D

probably make theflaps and ailerons darker with more contrast or somthing not sure yet.

navajoboy you have better access to the details of the upper wing (  I have found almost no decent pictures of the rivet patterns and I hate using artists drawings. can you check it against some photos for me for accuracy of the P-51s you live next to?

had to use trumpeters 1/24 scale p-51 for some of the details.

IE: panel lines and rivet patterns pictures would be great.

here is more fiddling.. the wing is now an attempt to simulate silver paint hehe.

the aileron and flap are supposed to be aluminum though.

Hey Fester that looks great, I have a suggest though.. The Rivets look like dents, I think you should do a layer of black very low opacity as a drop shadow under the rivets so it can make them look like they are going out not in  I might be wrong... maybe p51 rivets went in but I just thought it would look cool.. Anyways keep up the good work -Spade

They actually do go in.  Rivets are just like nails in that sense.  They are popped into the metal to hold them together, therefore causing a dent around the head of the rivet.  The head may pop out a minute amount, but the dent that it creates would be more visible.

In that sense, I'd say its just about perfect. Only thing I can see that I would change is the panel lines.  IMO, they may be just a tad too dark.

yeah the panel lines to dark need to fix that.

there are raised rivets inboard of the gun barrels simulating the heavy wing spar rivets. all other rivets are flush.
