As for the planes, your style is what matters.  Do you want to get up close and personal and have a turn fight?  Then the A6M2 is for you.  It's the closest turner in the game, but rather sluggish.  If you like a little more speed in the turning game, then try the NIK1, the SpitIX, or the P-38.  If you like to cut and run, the LA7 is the best plane for speed, firepower and low-level maneuverability (it's also hated by a lot of players for that reason).

Landing, once you do it a few times, is simple.  In AH you have to get your airspeed very low to deploy your landing gear (most planes is under 150, I believe, and you deploy your gear with the G key).

Personally I line up my approach on the field, after lowering my throttle to zero, sometimes cutting off the engine, too.  Line up your approach, check your speed and make it about 50-100mph, by doing rolls or climbing through the stall horn.  Drop your gear when your speed is low enough and YOU are low enough.  Descend slowly and try touching down with the tail first, then work through the bounces, aiming your nose down, until the plane is on the tarmac.  Start pushing the brakes (default key is the space bar).  I use this method:  Hold space for three seconds, release, hold space for three seconds, release.  That should make your landings easier.

Good luck, and I hope to see your name in lights soon!

Try going to the Training Arena, their are usually people there that will be glad to help you with not only landing but many of the other questions that you will have about flying AH. As for what plane is best Arcade057 gave you a few good examples, but any plane can be a killer in the right hands, so fly different planes and find one that you like.

First of all, Welcome to AH2. We're glad you decided to join us :).

It's best that we ask you a few questions so we can best answer your questions. Here we go;

Have you flown any flight sims/air combat games before? It's not so important which ones you might have flown but that you have a little stick time.

Do you have a joystick? If so, which one?

If you wish we can set up a time to meet in the Training Arena (TA) and get you setup and flying.

Best defenders are in my opinion Spitfire mkV and mkIX, N1Ki, La7, Hurricane IIc and C205. When "defending" i guess you mean upping at an attacked field and be lower and slower than the enemy. This case you also want to up with half or only a quarter of fuel.

Actually its much better defence to up from a field further back, preferable a higher field, climb and come in above the attackers, about 5k above them. Then you can cherry pick em while they cherry pick your countrymen.

Best for that are in my opinion are, 190D9, 190A6, Typhoon, Tempest, P51, La7, C205, 109G10, F4U-1C. Up depending on plane with half fuel and droptanks, when no droptanks available for the plane full fuel.

Landing:
Thats pretty hard and a lot depends on the plane, some are easier to land some harder.
Line up with the runway from a bit away (~8 miles away) and with some altitude, say 1k above field level (if your to close level out at 1000feet over the airfield and extend away in direction of runway, 180 degree turn and voila lined up).

Slow down, drop gears and full flaps. Check if your gears are working (might have lost one during combat) If only one gear is down retract and belly.

Play with the throttle so the plane descents onto the touchdown point with a little above stall speed (try out stall speed for your plane).

When you notice that your sinkrate is to high at this point apply a short burst of throttle to reduce sinkrate (since your so slow the nose should point up while sinking and the throttle will pull the plane up).

Directly over the start of the runway your plane should be at about 10feet and slow (10mph above stall). Now cut the throttle to 0 and try to hold the plane lvl with the elevator.

Since your are only a bit above stall speed the plane should drop onto runway soon.

Alternatively, when you come in from high you will carry to much speed. Head for a point above 100feet in front of the runway about 50feet above ground with full speed/throttle.
When your there cut throttle and do a 360 degree turn pulling nearly into blackout, lvl turn.

Then your slow enough to land. The advantage is that you can head for the airfield with full speed and only slow down in the last second to land.

When you come in a little to fast try to use full sideslip to break.

Schutts said it right. theres many ways to land.

Theres a few things they all have in common:

Landing Speed: as slow as possible (stall speed). in a spit, try 100-120 at the beginning. thats still faster than stall speed, but its a bit more easy to handle, till your used to flying your plane 'on the edge'.

Sinking Speed: below 1000 ft per min. (thats -1 on the gauge). best rate is 500 ft/min.

Deploy full flaps. (They make the plane a bit wobbly in handling, but give additional lift)

Dont forget gear :).

The key to landing in AH is practice. Go to TA and land and reup until you get a feel for the plane. dont worry about landing perfectly on concrete... my first landings were all on the green runway next to the grey one. as long as your plane stays in one piece, you can always taxi on tarmac to get a successful landing.

Just play around, in a few weeks you wont think about how to land anymore. :)

Welcome to AH2!

Well if you would takeoff once in a while you could actually land.

How do i land?
« Reply #10 on: August 20, 2005, 12:07:53 PM »
I've been with the game for eight months and had a hell of a time landing, at first. My main problem was going too fast which I still have some problems with as often I can't take time for an extended set up on landing (if the bad guys are close by).

I've gotten to where I can set up a landing pretty quickly (albeit not quick enough sometimes) by getting down to 1000 feet or lower and doing a series of hard S turns. If I slow down too much and haven't lined up on the runway well enough, I may have to use the + key to throttle up just enough to stay in the air. I use keypad 5 combined with 4 or 6 to see how I'm lining up with the runway while doing my S turns. Those keys allow you look to your left or right while the plane is tilted during turns. Adjust your S turns as necessary.

I've gotten it down so usually my speed is down to where it needs to be by the time I'm  near the runway and low enough to land. I drop my landing gear just before I'm ready to make my final drop to the tarmac but hopefully far enough ahead that it's completely down when I touch down. I fly the P51 which seems to take forever for the gear to drop but some planes, like the Mosquito drop the gear pretty quick.

Once on the field, if you haven't slown down enough to stop quickly, you might find the plane veers a little to the left or right. Correct that by using your rudder (A or D key)  to steer the plane left or right. Don't forget to straighten out with the S key when needed.

My latest thing to do, when I'm on a hot airfield and need to land with bullets flying by me, is an abreviated version of the above but I don't bother dropping my landing gear and just belly land. Like someone mentioned above, as long as you land on the runway, you've landed successfully. Problem with the belly landings is you have to make sure you're REAL straight on the runway. Once you commit and touch down, you can't turn back onto the runway so make sure you're lined up real straight before commiting to a belly flop. One thing nice about belly landings, at least in the P51, is the plane seems to stop a lot quicker than a conventional landing.

I have yet to make a successful "conventional" landing on a carrier. Closest I've come was belly having my gear collapse and sliding across the deck with the plane stopping with the nose hanging just over the front edge of the carrier. I have a hell of a time trying to judge the height of the deck in relation to my plane's height and I'm always going too fast or too slow, or so it seems. One of these days I'll get it down...I hope. Of course, I usually get shot down in the carrier planes so not much of a problem the way things really go anyway.

You can use the attitude indicator to keep the nose up the right amount.  The indicator in the middle that looks like a W with wings (-w-) think of it as "wings and wheels".  If you set it up so that the bottom of the W (the wheels) is on the horizon (the ground) then you are at the right attitude to land.  Check it out when you first take off, you'll see.  As for the rest, get your speed below 150 (120 or so is better) lower the landing gear, (g) then let out flaps in increments as your speed bleeds off (q).  Keep lined up on the runway and cut the throttle completely once you touch down.  Stand on the brakes and keep it straight with rudder.

Landing.

1) Lineup
First line up with the landing strip, so it is straigh in front off you, in a straight line.

Get low enough say ~ 2-3K higher than runway.

2) Slowdown
If you are way to fast make a 360 flat turn. That get the speed down quick. If you are just a bit fast, use the rudder (full left/full right) to slow the plane down. You can even turn off the engine for a while ("E") and turn it back on if needed ("E")

Generally you can get wheels down, when you go under 200mph.

But when landing you want to go down, and that might pick up speed. If you accelerate over 200mph with wheels down, they might rip off the plane, and then you are withour wheels :(

So get the plane to aprox 150-160 mph, so you get the flaps down "W"/"Q" for flaps, all the way down. Then press "G" for wheels down.

3) Finall  aproach
Then descent to very low, lineing up the runway. Aim for the start of the runway.

4) Touch down.
At the last moment you have to slighty pull the nouse up. The runway will dissapeare from the view :( (Its now behind the nose).
You might have to give a bit of throtle, to keep the plane flying. You should still be going down.
After a few seconds, the runway will reapeare in the side windows. (You were lined up, was going down, now you can see the runway on both sides.:aok )

At this point I press wheel breaks ("Space") and take the flaps up, all the way up. Shut the engine and hope no one vulches you.

Now with no engine and flaps up, the plane quickly falst the last feets to the run way.

You can leave the engine on and flaps up, that is just how I do it.

If you fly a big US fighter, you might go into a spin on the run way. Might be a good idea to keep the flaps down with the Corsairs / P47 ?

Also you can use Left / Right wheel breaks, to keep the planes straight. "C" / "V"

If landing on CV drop down the hook (Shift + G), and land the same way. If you land on the black stripes on the back part, the Hook will catch one, and stop the plane quick. If you are to fast, you might be "catapulted" back to the see :lol . Some people presses Hook up (Shift + G) as soon as they have landed, so that they dont get catapulted. But if you are not comming in to fast, there is no need for that.

Good luck with landings :)

As for best planes. IMO.

To up from a capped field, and kill all the vulchers.

LA7 Gets up to speed very fast, good chance to upp. Is a killer plane with 3 cannons ! (select the right gunz)

Hurricane and Zero with 50% fuel also upps fast. Turns like crazy.
Spit 5. Good overall plane if you get it up fast enough.

Best fighter IMO is the Spit 5. It is easy to fly, has good guns. Turns and stall fights great. A bit slow, so its hard to get away or catch runners.

LA7 is a great plane also. It can catch runners and exit fights easy. Very good guns, gets "easy" kills.

Hellcat (F6F) is a bit harder but a great overall plane. And those 50 cal guns are great, with lots of ammo :)
