Well, it's done.
Checklist: Did I know anybody? No.
Did one or two other people remember me? Yes.
Was my shifty, quick glance at relevant name tags caught by my target? Yes.
As expected, my wife (who was of the previous year) knew more people than I did, and knew them by name.
The food was ok, but I feel sorry for the DJ who's dance floor could be best described using the words of Buzz Aldrin, who upon stepping out of the Lunar Module, spoke of 'Magnificent desolation'. One time, someone stepped on one of the corners of the dance floor (and eyes all around the room snapped to the front to see what was going to happen), but it just turned out to be one of the waitresses taking a shortcut.
Was it a letdown? Kinda. The event was great, but I realize how few of my graduating class I knew, and how few knew me.
Would I have regretted NOT going more? Yeah, no doubt. Second guessing what COULD have been is pretty easy. On the drive home, I was thinking I should have grabbed the mic for a minute. "Hi guys! My name is Ben Hallert, just a quick show of hands for anyone who remembers me. No? Just confirming, what school and year is this for? Ok! Well, y'all will probably remember me next reunion, but just not for anything I did or didn't do in school. And now, before the microphone is taken away from me, I give you... the Full Monty!" After which my wife would have yelled "Sorry girls, but he's TAKEN!"
I'll open up a new thread in 10 years to let you all know how the next one goes...
