High School reunion
« on: August 20, 2005, 08:11:30 PM »
Well...  I'm off to my high school reunion in a few minutes.

For the life of me, I can't remember any names or faces.  I'm realizing that I didn't really know anyone in my graduating class.

Should be interesting, thought y'all might enjoy spending your saturday evening ruminating on the social trainwreck your old pal Chairboy is currently experiencing.  The chorus of awkwards "Hey...  you!" when encountering half remembered faces, the embarassing intersections in the conversation where the realization that one of the parties has no idea who the person they're talking to is becomes unavoidable.

I'm not sure why I'm attending, except that I remember 5 years ago thinking "I can't wait to go to my reunion so I can show off how succesful I've been", but I realize, as I struggle into my tie, that I don't really care what any of those guys thinks anymore.  As my fingers haltingly fumble through the vaguely familiar motions of a windsor, I know that the only reason I'm really going now is because I already bought the terribly expensive tickets, and I'm the kinda guy that's so cheap that I invented copper wire by holding onto a penny a cashier was taking one day.

Ah well, off to feed the lions.  Wish I was one of the romans and not the main course.

I don't think my highschool will even let me go to my reunion :(

That's why I plan on being someone's date :D

Have fun, it should be somewhat interesting, even if you have to thumb through an old yearbook when you get back home to realize who you were talking to :)

I didn't go to a single one until the 30'th. That one just confirmed that I didn't miss anything by not going to the others.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

I haven't gone to one.... and I've yet to hear anyone say "OMG! You should have come!"

It seems to me that they are always akward and ultimately dissapointing.

I'm interested in hearing how your's goes - so give us an update when you get back. :)

I skipped my 10th, which was a few years ago.  A buddy of mine who I've known since high school went.  He said I didn't miss much, and was better off not wasting my money.  Besides, now that I'm back in Salem (where I went to HS), I get to experience that "hey, didn't you go to North High" bit now and again.  Most recently at my new job...our FedEx delivery guy was in my class.

I went to my 20th. It was like a final goodbye to faces I will probably never see all at the same time again. I was bored. Drank a few beers, talked to a guy from my old metal shop class.

Checked out how big the butts got on some of the chicks that were hot back then. Chuckled at all the baldies who used to do that 70s hair parted in middle with feathered sides, and always carried a ladies comb in their back pocket thing.

Got my 25th coming up. Last one I went to was my 10th.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

Never been to a school reunion. They tried to organise one years ago. But I heard no more. I imagine the couldn't contact enough people to organise it properly. I only ever met two people from my class since I left and they coincidentally worked in the same company as me. I heard of one other from my year. He became a football manager.  It was an all boys school.
The rest have vanished into the mists of time. I couldn't even find any in the phone directories. I think they all must have emigrated to Britain or the USA back in the eighties. I even signed up one one of those websites for getting in touch with people you once knew. But my name was the only one there for my entire year.

In any case what would we say to each other. I never liked school much and can't even remember a single amusing incident during my whole school career.

I often think about how odd it is that you can see someone every day, be friends, have good times together. Then one day you say 'See you later'. But you don't. You never see them again.  That applies to work colleagues and service friends too. (And ex girlfriends).

Guys...PahhhhLeez think outside of the Box!!!

Crash High School Reunions  No one recognizes anyone and it's a great place to pick up on the recently divorced chicks.

Walk in, belly up to the bar, hear a few stories and move to another group..regurge the old stories and pooof yer in.

Works also with Weddings and Funerals... I'll have a book out next year.

Ohhh... and foriegn language books in hand, Cafes,  outside of Womens Colleges will get you in the Kitty.... Food for thought!

Well, it's done.

Checklist:  Did I know anybody?  No.

Did one or two other people remember me?  Yes.

Was my shifty, quick glance at relevant name tags caught by my target?  Yes.

As expected, my wife (who was of the previous year) knew more people than I did, and knew them by name.

The food was ok, but I feel sorry for the DJ who's dance floor could be best described using the words of Buzz Aldrin, who upon stepping out of the Lunar Module, spoke of 'Magnificent desolation'.  One time, someone stepped on one of the corners of the dance floor (and eyes all around the room snapped to the front to see what was going to happen), but it just turned out to be one of the waitresses taking a shortcut.

Was it a letdown?  Kinda.  The event was great, but I realize how few of my graduating class I knew, and how few knew me.

Would I have regretted NOT going more?  Yeah, no doubt.  Second guessing what COULD have been is pretty easy.  On the drive home, I was thinking I should have grabbed the mic for a minute.  "Hi guys!  My name is Ben Hallert, just a quick show of hands for anyone who remembers me.   No?  Just confirming, what school and year is this for?  Ok!  Well, y'all will probably remember me next reunion, but just not for anything I did or didn't do in school.  And now, before the microphone is taken away from me, I give you...  the Full Monty!"  After which my wife would have yelled "Sorry girls, but he's TAKEN!"

I'll open up a new thread in 10 years to let you all know how the next one goes...

Reunions are great!

Was at one last year but then it was just 10 years since we finished school so too soon to forget anyone. Always nice to see that you are not the one who has gained most weight or lost the most hair.

ripsnort? :D

Anyway.. should be even more fun in another 10 years cause a couple of the girls were already way past their "best before date" and its great to show them my missus who is 5 years older but looks 5 years fresher than them :p
