How you know when it gets from bad to worse. An AAR
« on: August 21, 2005, 08:16:00 PM »
Today after defending P56 from a relentless onslott of rooks, flight leader Whalen comes up with a daring plan to try and make the rooks think there is a CV somewhere off of base 70 by taking navy planes off of 72.

So Whalen, myself, Ledhead, Kid63, Dive8up and Busher up out of 72 with 3 F6F's 1 F4U a spit and.... Wait what's this??? Apparently Busher either didn't get the orders or had a bad hang over from the night before and climbed into the cockpit of a P51. Oh well to late now, the decision is mad that busher will go in more from the north, hit what he can and drag the nmy fighters low for us.
A few minutes later we here Bushers Voice crackle over the com channel "Both barracks dead". We all congratulate him with a series of WTG's..
We're all level at 10k when Whalen barks out the orders "All right gentlemen, lets go lets do this. Hit ord and ahhh.. Hit what ever you want."
Pushing the throttle all the way forward I feel the engine of my mighty F6 surge with power. Whalen, Ledhead and Kid63 begin their dives while I hang high preferring a steeper dive. Kids Voice crackles over the radio "I'll get the radar" and and Whalen comes back with "good idea hit dar hit dar".
I begin my dive right toward the left hand ammo bunker then boom, they disappear as I push release button for my bombs. Looks like Ledhead had nailed them both just as I got there. We zip on through the field and Whalen Nails an ack gun and one of the ammo bunkers on the opposite side of the field while the rest of the guns and an M16 blaze away at us, Kid pipes in with "Radar dead".
We all make quick reversals and head back in on the base. I snap off a few shots at the remaining Ammo bunker but it to blows up before my rounds even get there.
Kid dives in after a 109 that's chasing Djsteve when 1 of the ack's hits a fuel tank leaving a white streamer trailing off behind his F4U. The 109 keeps firing away at Djs' 38 and  Kid works hard to stay on the 109s' 6, He opens fire and scores a hit and smoke starts to pour from the 109. The 109 then starts to twist and turn trying to shake the hog from it's tail. No such luck, one of it's gear goes flying off that makes him even more desperate to shake Kid and he pulls up and left hard just as another ack scores a hit on kids already leaking plane and one of his gear goes flying off as well. Then Whalen pipes up "Watch the jug!"
A P47 that I had just made a pass at comes in hard, guns blazing away at Ledhead (who was 1.5k away from the 47)  right over the right side of Kids F4U with Whalen hot on his tail and a P51D right behind him, all of the rounds miss. Whalen breaks off of the Jug when he sees tracers fly past his canopy from the 51 behind him. He pulls up hard and comes around spotting another Pony that I was chasing. He goes for the head on pass and scores some nice hits but not with out a high price. An LA-7 had joined the 1st pony behind Whalen and where the 51 had failed to score any fatal hits the LA must have had more luck  because the next thing Whalen knew his horizontal stabilizer was gone... The last thing we heard was a yell  "I'M DOWN!!!"
Meanwhile  Kid had gone in on an ack gun and got his oil shot out,  a minute later his engine died forcing him to plow his hog into the field. It is yet unknown if he survived the wreck and is listed as MIA.
Ledhead again had that nasty 47 on his 6 as he dove in on another ack. It is unclear as to which one shot his horizontal stabilizer off, the ack or the spraying Jug.
It is commonly thought that he died on impact as his F6 belly flopped onto the ground.
I meanwhile was hot on the 6 of the Pony B that Whalen had HO'd and the LA that shot him down managed to hit one of my fuel tanks as he went by but it wasn't serious.. The pony and I twisted and turned and I managed to score some good hits on him but not enough to bring him down. I again nailed him with 1 last set of rounds before his engine quit and I over shot him. He managed to ditch on the field.
As I flew across the field I was getting hammered by the ack but I made it through and was just in time to see LedHead going down but right in front of me was the 6 of the Jug that had killed him. I flew in engine screaming, 800....7....6....400 I mashed down on the trigger unleashing a hell storm of bullets from my 6 50's right into the Jugs tail and the whole tail section popped off.   That's what you get for shooting down my squad mates, I thought to myself. Then I realized my plane was acting funny, it kept dipping to the left side. I glanced out and saw half of my wing was gone. then Bushers voice came over the head set "Flayd you have an LA on you!"
I nursed my 1 and a 1/2 winged hellcat around and about 3/4 of the way and the LA let loose with another volley knocking off half of my right wing.  At this point I was laughing at my predicament. Busher was on the radio again letting me know he was on his way to help me but I told him not to worry about it as I was now flying with my rudder and missing 1/2 a wing on both sides, although the plane was handling allot better now than with only 1 side damaged. :)
I finished my turn back to the field while the LA kinda hung out 2 to 400 behind me waiting for my heavily damaged plane to fall out of the air..... I didn't and managed to HO and hit 2 P51's coming off of the field, though neither one was hurt much. After that the LA decided I wasn't quite dead yet and started firing again knocking off both elevators then I got a pilot wound, my tail section fell off and I finally just exploded in mid air.

Hey look at the bright light......   Whalen? is that you?....... and Ledhead .......    Hiya guys, lets go get a beer.
  .

P.S.   I would have told what happened to Dive8up but something was wrong with the film and his spit just kinda hung a few k up in the air and wouldn't move...
  My theory is aliens......

I was going to try posting pictures of this but picture hanger registration is closed right now so I have now way to get pics on the forum.

Thanx Skuzz.  I had to do an aar for this one because it just got so funny at the end.  The best way to describe what my Hellcat looked like is to call it a Hellfish instead 2 little fins in front and a wagging tail that looked like it was providing the forward momentum. :D

Oh and by the way this type of mission takes a long time to write up, have to keep going back to the recording over and over to see what happened next to each pilot.  My wife got tired of hearing the vox chatter repeat lol.
