Are you signed up for organ donation?

Just got a little mail from the deparment of health here. In it was an organ donor card - basically just fill it someitng out send it in and keep a card on you in case of an emergency.

Options were full (meaning heart, liver, kidneys, lungs etc) and limited (only some of them) and of course no.

I've signed it up for all and am gonna send it in tomorrow.

It got me wondering though; how many here have similar arrangements? Those of you who object to this idea, what are your reasons? Theological? Practical? A matter of principle?

The way i see it, if I am dead, they ain't no good to me so someone else might enjoy them.

It even has cool questions that goes along with it; am I *really* dead if someone walks around with my heart, liver, kidneys and lungs?  . Easy to answer, but still sorta cool  .

At any rate, please post yer input  .

Was the day of my 18th birthday. The 16st, first hour of the morning, I signed the paper that did me an organ donater.

I had talked with my parents about it before that day-when I was 12- that, if something happened to me, I wanted my organs to be donated. So I guess that since when I was 12 I am one.

But officially only since 5 years ago  

[edit]BTW, the terms of the donation are clear. If I get my brain dead, I want to be disconnected at once. That means immediate organ extraction, I was told.

That was the only nasty thing I had to face when signing. But well I hope I never get there  [/edit]

I carry a donor card with me at all times which states that any part of my body could be transplanted after my death.

I have a pretty pragmatic view to it all. With all the people needing kidneys, hearts etc, why should the worms be the recipient? I'm agnostic so I don't have any theological objections, and my body is really not 'me' in terms of personality or sense of individuality. When I die, the body remains but whatever I was is gone forever.

Well, that's my take on it.

Here if you want to be a donor they just stamp it on your drivers license.

Like dowding said, why feed the worms when u can save or improve a life.

Btw did anyone see the Simpsons episode where Homer has to donate a kidney to his father? I love the part where the doctor says "well actually we gave it to Larry Hagman. He's already got 3 kidneys, and 2 livers. We didnt want to give them to him, but he owerpowered us!"

Yep, if I remember right it was a simple Yes/No you had to answer filling out your driver's license.

I think driver's licences over here have that option, but I've carried a donor card since before I learnt to drive.

Is there anyone who doesn't agree with it?

Don't have a problem what organ donation. If I can help someone else out b4 the rest is cremated, all the better.

Ah.. to have had the chance to extend Micky Mantle's life another 9 months.

Organ donor is a matter of a simple code on the back of your Driver's License here in Oregon.

I'm somewhat neutral on the whole subject.  I can see both sides of the fence as far as donation goes.  My grandfather refused to even have my grandmother enbalmed when she died.  I don't know of a single person that cticized him about it.  I also don't know of anyone that criticized my other grandfather for having his wife enbalmed.

On a side note... when I was at Mt Home AFB, we scrambled an F-111 to transport a heart from Portland, OR to NY.  It set a coast to coast speed record for nearly 2 years (until the SR-71 retired).  The copilot had to carry the heart packed in ice in an icechest on his lap.  When they arrived at NY, he was unable to get out of the plane as the chest had inhibited most of the circulation to his legs.

I donated a piano last year. I get that warm fuzzy feeling knowing that former property of mine will live on.

On our drivers license, it has alittle area (attached quality paper, stick-back) that allows you to select either "All" or "Specific" organs to donate in the event of an auto accident.  

I was pulled over when I was 25 for a very loud muffler.  The female officer took my license back to her patrol car and 'ran it thru' the usual computer scan to check if I had any outstanding warrants, etc. (Standard practice).  She came backing laughing and gave me only a warning on the loud muffler saying that my humor touched her.  On my organ donation 'Specific' entry I had previously written down "All but one, you figure it out!"

I used to say that when I die they could have any organ they wanted but now that I'm married my wife tells me what I can or cannot do so she has already told me that when I die she is going to freeze dry me and put me in a glass case so she can squeak at me when ever she wants.

When we were first married I thought she was joking but now 18 years later.....

Or my any other organ for that matter.

Except for my shlong. The reciever of that will be one HAPPY camper! I mean, his girlfriend will be.
