Trees

Now the way the trees were before never bothered me.
The way the trees are now doesnt bother me either. Other then with GVs.

But before I get to that,

It used to be people complained about the trees being too high and people crashing into them. (which I only managed to do when I wasnt paying attention to where i was going. in which case I would have also hit it if it was the side of a mountain too)

Now I see more and more people complaining about hitting "invisible trees"

Now I am thinking. Did they really reduce the height of the trees or just make part of them unviewable?
Based on the amount of ingame whi...complaints about  them.
I am starting to think the latter is the case.

As for the GV issue. I do think they need to reduce the hit bubble around the trees. And they must have a hit bubble. Its either that or an invisible force feild around them as I can try and fire a round between  the branches of two seperate trees with no part of the leaves viewable in the turret view and still have shells explode in that gap that is supposed to be between the branches.

Now with the old trees I was able to fire rounds out of some pretty small gaps if I aimed it right. which is at least how it should be. Even though yes I know a round should be able to pass through a single leaf uneffected. I dont think thats going ot be a very reasonable expectation at this time.

I should hoever be able to fire a round through a clear and obvious gap between the branches of one tree and the branches of another.

Hell you can even get smoke rounds to explode in mid air the way it is now.

I'm a ground skimmer, I can be honest.  If I'm not kicking up dust I'm not flying low enough.

The invisible trees are just that.  Invisible.

Until the very last moment.  Many times I'd be flying and suddenly a tree will appear no more than 15 yards in front of me.

This happened to two of my squaddies including myself last night.

You'd think with having good hardware and framerates you'd be able to see a 300' tree, but no, it just pops up right in front of you.

It's the way the terrain is being drawn from what I can tell. Now I did see improvement in the tree visability when I cranked the detail up, but then my framerate went in the toilet.
I realize I'm only going to get so good a framerate with a 256mb 6800 Ultra and 2 gigs of ram, but figured it might be better than that.
Oh well

Trees appear, when in fighters, at a distance of less than 100 yards. Some trees appear, when in tanks, at a distance of less than 10 yards. Some trees don't appear at all, and no tree, leaf, brance, or airspace around can be penetrated by any weapons in the game.

Those are really my only complaints regarding the foilage.

My favorite tree is the "General Sherman Sequoia" that is 50' from the runway, when you are deadstick, attempting to land.

Up your LOD/object/visibility sliders in the video settings slightly, (or... don't fly so low!) and you won't have trees jumping out at you less than 100 yds away.  Also make sure you are at Full Vis Range (Shift+F1).
That said, the next version will allow most players to greatly increase their video settings and also have a great framerate. (see Optest)

I'll continue to skim the ground.

I think there's nothing more fun than sneaking up on a Tank in my HurriD.  Using the hills, they can't see me til I've taken their turret.

I have Ground Vis mapped to shift F4, but thanks Einstein. I actually have tried (and use) Ground Vis when in GVs. Still have trees that don't render til I hit them in full zoom.
