For self-protection, or to assist in looting?

A simple equation. You are alone with your family and you encounter a gang of hoodlums. If you are unarmed it doesn't matter if they are or not -- you have no power against the mob. You lose. If you are armed, even if they are armed you represent a hard target. If there are easier targets they will go elsewhere. You win.

As quoted in the Tribune today:

John Carolan said he was sitting on his porch in the thick humid darkness just before midnight Tuesday when three or four young men, one with a knife and one with a machete, stopped in front of his fence and pointed to the generator humming in his front yard. "We want that generator," one said. "I fired a couple of rounds over their heads with a .357 magnum," Carolan recounted Wednesday. "They scattered. You've heard of law west of the Pecos. This is law west of Canal Street."

You are responsible for your own protection in cases like this, and in general.

I'm taking my roommates shooting next weekend to get them more comfortable with my firearms. I'm also going to add 1 or 2 more rifles or shotguns to the cabinet... Pruett's is running a "Looter's Special" of pistol-gripped Mossberg 12 gauges right now.

Well, I would want a gun.

It is clear the national gaurd and police cant controll what is going on. If you stayed home to try and protect you crap from looters you better have one. But I would not have stayed home. Me and my guns and the dog and family would have headed for this hills.

Now for an earth quake we wont have notice, so I think its best to stock up on ammo and some extra food. :D

No mater how much people cry about guns being the problem.... they are not. They contribute sure, just like cars contribute to drunk driving deaths.

Tell that to the thousands of people who have yet to see somebody from the National Guard, or who only see them in passing in some truck.

It's really simple: unarmed man and family vs mob, even an unarmed mob, is going to lose unless you have super human powers or live in a kung fu movie. Unarmed man in house against 240 lb. prison hardened career criminal is going to lose, unless the police arrive via transporter. These criminals don't have a blood feud, they prey on the weak. If you can pose a viable threat they will go elsewhere, even if they are armed. They don't want anything close to an equal fight.

You do realize that the "mob" will quite possibly possess firearms as well...

Yes, and they will then go elsewhere because they don't want to face an equal threat unless what you have is absolutely worth their potential death (in which case your superior training with firearms will give you a leg up). They will seek the easier meat, perhaps at your house :) Without a firearm you are screwed either way. They don't have to be armed for you to be screwed if you are unarmed.

There's a hotel in NO populated by 'affluent' refugees, taken over by an armed gang last night. They looted, they robbed, then they raped.

There's a Hospital in NO, attacked last night by looters. They robbed, they raped..

I'm not about to convince anybody that's not inclined to get a weapon for self defence in a civil unrest situation to run out and get one.

Like everything else in life, you have choices. I suggest you evaluate your circumstances and choose wisely.
