Came across this in a book today......
"......Engines failed at a discouraging rate. Between 1918 and 1925, mechanical failures caused U.S. airmail planes to make some 1,600 emergency landings. After one pilot had to put his plane down in a crowded cow pasture, his headqaurters in Washington received this cheerless telegram:"Engine quit.Only place to land on cow. Killed cow. Wrecked plane. Scared me. Smith"
