Maybe it's a regional thing. I'm pretty sure it's 20% here. I know it was in New York when I was living there. I've never worked in the service industry, though.

Servers are the wrong people to ask if thats where you got the info. :D

Still it may, but I will NOT pay 20% for bad service.

Meal costs have gone up over time, so 15% is still fair.

I googled it. The standard seems to be between 15 and 20%.

I have left pennies on two ocasions.

One the waiter got my order wrong 3 times then never cameback to fix it the last time.

I had to get another waiter to take over.

It was cool cause she was model hot. I handed her the tip and put a pennie on the table left. The GF wouldnt let me stay to talk to the manager.

The other one was my 21st bday. We walked into an all night lions, at 1:15, the server came up, said I will be right back, then came back and pulled the same thing, by the time she took the order is was 2:05 and I couldnt order my 21st birthday beer.

She was hot but she got a pennie.

ok, so we were both right.

Still don't think it should a be a flat 20% some waiters just suck and you cringe when you get them again.

10% standard, maybe 20% if the waitress is hot, i know her, or she's really good...and as a canadian, i probably have a higher standard than americans,

but thats because canadian waitresses make a fair amount of money, and most of them are in the 16-22 years old and living at home range

For food, I generally go 15 - 20%.  If I'm at a bar, which is pretty rare, usually it's a buck or two when I leave.  At $5 a drink, they should be able to pay the bartender well...and if not, tough.  If it isn't a total rip off, then the tip goes up considerably.

JOE
All right. I'll take care of the check. You guys can get the tip. Should be about a buck apiece. And you, when I come back, I want my book.

MR. WHITE
Sorry. It's my book now.

JOE
Hey, I changed my mind. Shoot this piece of ****, will you?

EDDIE
All right. Everybody cough up some green for the little lady.

Come on. Throw in a buck.

MR. PINK
Uh-uh. I don't tip.

EDDIE
You don't tip?

MR. PINK
No - I don't believe in it.

EDDIE
You don't believe in tipping?

MR. BLUE
You know what these chicks make? They make ****.

MR. PINK
Don't give me that. She don't make enough money, she can quit.

EDDIE
I don't even know a ****ing Jew who'd have the balls to say that. Let me just get this straight. You don't ever tip, huh?

MR. PINK
I don't tip because society says I have to. Alright, I mean I'll tip if somebody really deserves a tip, if they really put forth the effort, I'll give 'em something extra, but I mean this tipping automatically is for the birds.

I mean as far as I'm concerned they're just doing their job.

MR. BLUE
Hey, this girl was nice.

MR. PINK
She was OK - but she wasn't anything special.

MR. BLUE
What's special, take you in the back and suck your dick?

EDDIE
I'd go over 12% for that.

MR. PINK
Hey Look, I ordered coffee, right? Now we've been here a long ****in time, and she's only filled my cup three times. When I order coffee, I want it filled six times

MR. BLONDE
Six times? Well, you know, what if she's too ****ing busy?

MR. PINK
Words "too ****ing busy" shouldn't be in a waitress' vocabulary.

EDDIE
Excuse me, Mr. Pink - the last ****ing thing you need's another cup of coffee.

MR. PINK
Jesus Christ - I mean these ladies aren't starving to death. They make minimum wage. You know, I used to work minimum wage. And when I did, I wasn't lucky enough to have a job society deemed tip-worthy.

MR. BLUE
You don't care they're counting on your tips to live?

MR. PINK
You know what this is? It's the world's smallest violin playing just for the waitresses.

MR. WHITE
You don't have any idea what you're talking about. These people bust their ass. This is a hard job.

MR. PINK
So's working at McDonald's, but you don't feel the need to tip them, do you? Why not? They're servin ya food. But no, society says don't tip these guys over here, but tip these guys over here. That's bull****.

MR. WHITE
Waitressing is the number one occupation for female noncollege graduates in this country. It's the one job basically any woman can get and make a living on. The reason is because of their tips.

MR. PINK
**** all that.

MR. BROWN
Jesus Christ!

MR. PINK
Hey, I'm very sorry that the government taxes their tips. That's ****ed up. That ain't my fault. It would appear that waitresses are just one of the many groups the government ****s in the bellybutton on a regular basis. You show me a paper says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it. Put it to a vote, I'll vote for it. But what I won't do is play ball. And this non-college bull**** you're giving me, I got two words for that: "Learn to ****in type." Cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent, you're in for a big ****in' surprise.

MR. ORANGE
Hey - he's convinced me. Give me my dollar back.

Yeah I just finished watching it for 100th time. After reading the post and replying earlier today I had the scene stuck in my mind.

Even when reading the script I hear the characters voices...

I'm the only male server where I work. I usually get anywhere from 15% - 18%. I consider a 10% tip to be lazy, I don't give bad service. I always check back a few minutes after food is delivered to see how everything is and if drinks need to be refilled. I always clear plates and never talk the table's ear off. And on a $30 check I get a $3 tip...when I know I gave above average service. That portrays you, the customer, as cheap or with below average math skills - or both.

So true.  The staff shouldn't get a bigger tip just because management is gouging.  Serving a drink is serving a drink.  Serving a meal is serving a meal.  It doesn't get harder if the food costs more.  Tip should be independent of price.

What I tip usually depends on both the quality of service and on how busy the place is--I'll leave more on a slow night.  I tend to be fairly generous with tips since the places I eat at tend to be the kinds of places that pay a pretty small base wage to their waitresses.

I tip the waitress/waiter less if he uses the word "server" in describing himself.  I hate PC crap.

20% from me most of the time.  If you go to the same place alot you need to tip good,  the servers do remember.

Well...  minimum wage is lower for waiters/waitresses up here than it is for people in other lines of work.

I tip 15-25%, unless service is poor then it could range from 0 to a $1 or $2.
If I am a regular or know the server of course it goes up, and yeah.. I'll tap the hot waitress a little more...

Some places put all the tips in a pot and share it out at the end of the night...  I would like it if establishments made this public knowledge, though unless its a CC receipt they have no way of knowing how much was collected in tips anyways...
