Oh, by the way, I consider too much attention worse than no attention.

My wife was a waitress and we usually give 20-25%. We can take mistakes as everyone makes them, but if you're rude to us for no reason then the tip starts to dwindle. Remember guys in the USA the minimum wage is only $2.13 an hour for a waitress/waiter. A lot of them have harder jobs than most think, try cleaning up after a family with 4 kids who have parents who don't think they need to control their kids in public. Or better yet wait until the kid pukes from eating too much and then expect that waitress to clean it up. Just would make you really happy with everyone I'm sure.

I just have to share a story that most servers/bartenders I'm sure can relate to, and that being teachers are usually the worse tippers (at the 5 different restaurants I worked at, this was always the case)

We had to fire a cocktail wattress after she hosted a huge gathering of public school teachers who came in after one of their "workshops" for free appetizers and happy hour.  There were 12 in the group. My CW worked her butt off, getting them free apps, drinks, etc. They had her running!  After camping out in her section for 3 hours, and spending an insane amount of money on cocktails (even at Happy hour prices), when they got up to leave, they left a total of 32 cents on the table (probably by accident, as one gent was cleaning out his pockets at one point in the evening)  She picked up the change and threw it at the customers as they were exiting the lobby, calling them every explicit name under the sun, with "Cheap bastards" inbetween the choice words.  We had to let her go after several of the teachers called and complained to our GM.(One even said "Tipping is NOT required by law!" ....)

Ouch.  In PA at least, Tipping for large parties IS required by law.  But most often, it is automatically included in the check.

I'm usually a good tipper 20% as long as the service is descent or if the waitress is really hot or whatever. On a side note, I went to Cabo San Lucas with my family about a year ago and stayed at the El Presidente hotel ( all inclusive, meals drinks everything free ) Anyways they had 2 restaraunts there and they were mexican and Italian, we wanted some steaks one night and the chef made us some, only for our family, so I left the guy a $20 bill... I get back to the room and the chef is calling me to say that I left some $ on the table, and I said no that is for you, Thank you for the steaks they were great, he thanked me and said thats the most money he's ever made in a day and made us some lunches the next day because we were going marlin fishing... To make a long story short the service in the US has just gone down the crapper in the last 10 years, heck I can't even find me a bartended down here that can even make a layered drink actually layered lol... The only possible fix I see to the problem is for ppl like me to stop tipping for lousy service, heck you go out to a bar nowadays and everytime the girl brings you a drink she's expecting a buck ir two... If its a good night I could have up to 15 - 20 beers ( I am in TX u know ) thats 15-20 extra bucks I got to give to the waitress... Whats really bad is when your at a club or somewhere and your with your wife or GF or whatever and the lady comes by selling roses or taking  pictures or something, its like you have to buy them or you look like a jerk in front of your significant other. I swear you can't go out and do anything anymore for under $100 if you take your family, its crazy. What happened to $5 outfield cheap seat tickets and $1 movie tickets, cheapest baseball tickets I can find are $25 bucks a pop( and thats for the TX rangers, I wouldn't even consider them  an actual baseball team lol ) and if the kids wanna go to the movies, tickets are $8, drinks and popcorn are like $6 bucks, you have to drop your kids off with $100 bucks lol, when we were young I couldn't even imagine $100 lol, and heck I'm only 26

allot of restaraunts and places like that will include a gratuity on the check when there is a large group or a large bill, for those 12 teachers ya'll should have added that to the bill, unless they were all ordering seperately which I doubt they were because I'm sure they put it on there expense accounts, teachers are notorious for stuff like that when on those "workshops".. heck if I take 4 or 5 customers out to eat or to a bar, they always add it in. and contrary to what that teacher said tipping IS expected in this country and even if the service is sub par you are expected to pay an extra 10% at least, 20% for a good job, thats just common knowledge, something a teacher should have known. If I was GM of that bar I would have a rule that says if theres a group of 5 or more or the bill goes over $100 I add an automatic gratuity to the bill

Wotan great post dude, love that movie

on another note about tipping

What services do we find tippable ??

waitresses, bartenders, servers, heck I have friends that tip the kid at Albertsons for carying out the groceries, like in the movie society says we tip this guy but not that guy, who and what are we tipping for nowadays. Do you tip flight attendants for drinks ? I have a feeling this is going to get out of hand in the future and I'm gonna have to tip the guy at the Texaco to reach up and hand me a pack of smokes lol
