Black members of Congress criticized the pace of relief efforts, saying response was slow because those most affected are poor.

Well... the most affected are the poor.

The people with some "safety net" are already out of the area unless they were just too foolish to heed the warnings.

Saw a number somewhere... can't remember where but the estimate is that there are (or were) over 100,000 people in New Orleans that did not possess a car.

By and large, the people in New Orleans at the SuperDome or the Convention center, etc. are probably poor.

I keep expecting Lou Farrakan or Al Sharpton to show up.

Only a matter of time...

I dunno... Farrakan is a whack job.

While I don't necessarily agree with most or possibly any of what Sharpton has to say, he does seem to be the only guy in the DNC that has any passion for anything.

I'm not going to argue the point.

The difference is that Farrakan is a dangerous whack job. ;)

No. I think it was slow because we were unprepared.

A lot of things went wrong and it may have been avoidable.

First, the Army Corp of Engineers has been asking for additional funds for DECADES. They knew New Orleans was at risk.

Two, the city knew that a hurricane could do this and yet there was no real evacuation plan.

As for the military moving slowly. Yeah... we've been there. Moving a few hundred or a few thousand men and machinary isn't something that happens overnight. I suspect that we're moving on New Orleans no slower than we moved on Thailand. The difference is the 100 choppers and news casters filling the airwaves with scenes of death and destruction. Oh... and the victims all speak english.

Magic Eight Ball?  There was the biggest hurricane in recent history bearing down on the most vulnerable city in the gulf, and we weren't prepared for it.  That was a **** up.  Whose **** up it was, I dunno, but somebody was sleeping at the wheel.  It doesn't really matter now though, as getting the situation in hand is a heck of a lot more important than trying to assign blame.

I don't think it's any secret that I think Bush is a worthless heap, but at least he was smart enough to cancel his vacation and get to work when the poop hit the fan.

In a perfect world I'd say we should examine what happened here when we're several months down the road, and figure out how to respond better next time.  But in reality, the most that will probably happen is politicians lighting up torches and looking for people to blame, and nothing will get fixed.
