why 256mb?
« on: September 06, 2005, 09:43:32 PM »
Just did a clean install on the wife's computer. Why is aces hig showing her video card to be 256MB video memory, when I know it is 128MB? It shows this on the video performance monitor in the game at the top of the screen (in green writing)

the video car is a ATI 9600 pro, with cat 5.8 drivers.

The new series of cat drivers are adding your AGP Apeture size to the video memory.  My card is 256 meg but the game registers 512 because I have tmy apeture set at 256.  When I set it to 128 it read 384megs.  Why its doing that, I don't know but that is the reason for that.

You should be using the 4.12 Catalysts drivers with that video card or you will have some problems.

Skuzzy what is it about certain video drivers that clues you in to what is the better driver?

Reason I ask is because some folks over at DriverHeaven are claiming the newer set of drivers are better than the old 4.12 that people still use.

I'm kinda confused to what gets changed that degrades a set of drivers.

Couldnt find older Omega drivers cause I wasnt lookin in right place but it was right in front of me.

With all of the ATI 9xxx series, ATI introduced a very old bug in the newer drivers which causes many elements of Aces High to appear black (radar dots, horizon...).
Some of the newer cards from ATI, which still use the older GPU also have the same bug.  The ATIX3xx series is one of them, if I recall.

NVidia stopped optimizing thier drivers for the FX5xxx, and older cards, back in version 61.77.  Any driver later than that for the earlier cards will cause stutters, freezes, lockups, and generally poor performance overall.  61.77 is the best driver version for those cards.
It also seems NVidia has introduced some bugs in a couple of its later releases for the FX6xxx series.  They seem to come and go, so it is a 'hit and miss' proposition right now.

Both companies select the top ten , or so, box games (and benchmarks) to optimize for.  Sometimes these optimizations have a negative impact on, not only Aces High, but other games as well.

That's terrible.  I didn't realise that downloading a new driver affected older cards in that way!  However, I'm using ATI 9800 using 5.8 and have no problems.  All games I've ever bought recommend using the latest drivers..........

cheers

Guys, I just downloaded and installed the new AH with current patch.  I have an ATI 9550, 256mb.  I'm running Cat 5.6 and 2D driver version 6.14 (it's what came with my Cat install).  So far no problems.  I'm rather enjoying the game again.

After reading all these posts, I should say thank you, Lord, for no problems, eh?

Take care,

Jed
