VOX transmission lockups
« on: September 13, 2005, 11:20:58 AM »
I have decided that VOX is somehow related to the lockups I am having. Nearly every time (like 9 out of 10) times AH locks up its when I am switching a view in the middle of a VOX transmission. Several others (Delirium) have the same issue, and as far as I can tell we all have nVidia vid cards of some flavor.

The lockups are hard lockups, you cant ALT-ESC, ALT-TAB or CTL-ALT-DEL, and sound and VOX repeat for 5-15 seconds then stops and the game CTD's. I have lowered the hardware accel for my soundcard to 50% and tried all the VOX options (Wave In, beeps) and nothing helps.

I'm thinking somehow the nVidia video card is causing the VOX transmissions to lock the game up. Is there anybody else getting these with an ATi card?

Grits How do you change Views.

I am fairly certian the view change it's self can not cause a lock up. But need to know how your input is set up, view keys, stick buttons, or buttons maped to keys?

I use CH USB everything, and I have my views mapped to the hat using the keypad buttons. Should I try to change them to direct X button inputs instead? Its really odd that it always happens when VOX is transmitting.

Same thing here , but my VOX related lock up happend only when in a Tank  and when looking through the gun site in position #2 and when others are around me talking on VOX while I am shooting or while I am shooting and talking on VOX .

Did the whole  .resetv command and Nothing works after that , have to hold in the power button on my PC till it shuts off.

Ctrl Alt Delete does nothing and Alt Tab does nothing.

Now as for flying , and talking nothing goes wrong on VOX , I can hear everyone fine and they can here me.

Had similar freezes - nothing as bad as complete lock-up - but when using hat switch on CH fighterstick, and when vox is active, the view would stick for minute as i was changing views.

Also, transmit for vox was mapped to stick as well.

Not using any CH software - all mapping done within AH

I've noticed that when I hit 3 or more keyboard keys at the same time, the game won't respond to one or more of them.  I'm wondering if having your hat mapped as keyboard isn't causing the problem.

Just to clarify, it locks up when I hear other peoples transmission of VOX, not when I transmit. It has even happened in the tower when I am not switching view but when someone is transmitting VOX, but mostly its on view switches and VOX reception.

I have had this same thing happen when a vox transmission comes in right as I am doing something (ie changing view).  It would be a complete lockup requiring a cold shutdown with the vox transmission being continuously repeated.  I am using a Nvidia 6800 Ultra card.  I have reduced my sound hardware acceleration a couple of days ago as suggested here on the message boards and it seems to have stopped this problem but they have seemed to stop before.  It is just when a vox transmission comes in as I am doing something else.

One thing that I have noticed while reading this thread is that CH Products seem to be showing up in most of its posts.  I use all CH Products USB Products as well and have the view hat mapped through the CH Manager.  A few days ago, I did was upgrade my CH Manager from a old 2.2 version that I had been using with no problems at all until these lockups started showing up.  I looked it up, and on Sept. 9, I downloaded and installed the 3.6 version of the CH Manager so that I could help a squadie with his new CH Products mapping.

I have not had the lockups over the last few days since the changes in the sound hardware accelleration and CH Manager version.  But maybe I haven't changed a view at just the right time either.

Another thing to point out is that Stormy2U, my wife, has the identical CH Products equipment using the identical CH Manager map that I use and has not had any lockups at all.  For that matter, I have not even adjusted the sound hardware acceleration down on her comp.  Differences between my comp and hers is that she has a weaker Nvidia card and runs lower graphics than I do and she uses the onboard sounds and I have a SoundBlaster 5.1.

It definately has something to do with the vox as others have stated.  But what exactly is the vox clashing with to cause these problems is a mystery to me.  I just hope that though unintentional, I may have this problem behind me.  I will post back here though should I see the problem happen again.

A question for Hitech/Skuzzy....What changed with the vox transmissions around patches 2.04/2.041?  Vox is no where near as smooth now as it was a couple of months ago.  To make a long transmission, you used to be able to do several short transmissions back to back and all would go through.  Now if you do not leave a couple second pause between transmissions, the second transmission does not go out.  I am not meaning to change the direction of this thread.  But maybe what caused the changes in how well the Vox worked is also associated with this problem.

Well, I have rambled on for long enough.

Yup, this is exactly what is happening with me. This started to happen with 2.04, before that I had not had one lockup or CTD in 18 months.

Grits/Hitech,

I am using CH products and their software also.. Whether this is helpful or not Im not sure.

But I have noticed with certain "combinations" of CH inputs... I pull up the Video information (ctrl+ I)  not meaning too .This happens when I accidently hit the a combination of switches on my Joystick  that would normally only do one thing.

It may be that Grits on occasion is hitting a few combinations of programmed commands on his joystick and those commands when used in combination are causing the lockups.

Simliar to if I pushed Ctrl+alt+ del or something similiar at the same time on the KB.

With the programmed CH ctrl manager and all the combinations it seems to me the chance that the "magic" number of inputs, or right combinations may cause a lock up.

Kind of like your kid walking up and pushing all the buttons on your KB, and making it lock up.

JMHO...

That could be Balsy. The odd thing is, my hardware (and CH software) has not changed in more than a year, and this problem only seems to have started with 2.04. It could just be conincedence and have nothing to do with 2.04, I have no idea. The only thing I am sure of at this point is my system was stable for over a year and suddenly started doing this. I wish I could narrow it down more, but its got me stumped.

One other odd thing...whenever I have tried to reinstall DirectX 9C like after a driver change, it does not do anything. It initiates the setup, but does not copy anything and instantly goes to the "finised" screen. I think this may be involved.

Please read my post entitled 2.05 pacth 1 fixed...but I was having major probs with vox lockup and I think a large part of it for nvidia cars is the drivers...You need to be running 61.77

Maybe this isn't related, but I'll mention it anyway. On occasion, I'll get a loud buzzing sound through my headphones, without seeing anyone's name appear in the upper right hand corner. Without exception, if I pull up my net stat, I'll see a huge spike. I don't know if someone is actually transmitting and it's garbled due to delay, or if it's some phenomenon of lag. This started in the fairly recent past, with no changes being made to my system. Nvidia card, been running 61.77 drivers for months now. Using a saitek stick with out the saitek mapping software.

On other occasions, I'll experience a momentary freeze when someone tries to transmit on range- sometimes a very brief stutter, at other times a pause of a few seconds. Also, when trying to exit from a vehicle, or a plane on the runway, and someone is transmitting on range, the game will hang and the last few words will loop repeatedly. This also happens when I try to exit the game in the same situation.

I'm not sure if this is something within the game, or perhaps due to my connection (pings went way up in late spring, TYVM Savvass.). Anyway, thought I'd mention that on the off-chance that they're related occurances.

Grits...your comment about it happening around the time of patches 2.04/2.041 corresponds with the time that it started happening with me as well.  Something changed with the vox around that same time.  I have no idea what changed, but I think that we have all see how differently the vox reacts now.  I know my whole squad has noticed it and some won't even use the vox now because of the difficulties with it.

I know that you have your sound hardware acceleration turned down all ready.  But if you do not have the latest version of the CH Control Manager (3.6), try downloading the new one.  Your old maps will still work with it so no new programing will be required.  Just recalibrate your sticks/rudders and activate your map.

My problem does seem like it has went away for now.  Not sure if the new version of the CH Control Manager is the reason for that or I have just been lucky as of late.  But I would say that it is worth the try and I can see nothing that you have to lose but maybe a little bit of time.
