Oil i5 teh evu1 !!!1
« on: September 13, 2005, 06:58:00 PM »
So here I am, riding my 1977 Honda CB400F to work this morning...I live down a winding country road, which is a blast to ride on..so anyway I stop at a stop sign, waiting for some traffic on one of the more traveled roads to let up...There it is a hole in the traffic just large enough that if I gun it a little I can get in and up to speed...

I rev the engine.....
Start letting the clutch out...
Take off to make my left turn....
Rear tire loses traction about halfway through..
Bike falls over to the left skidding out of control..

I managed to get off it with only a little scuff on the left knee..And a minor pulled muscle  in my inner thigh

Only noticible damage to the bike was a little 1/2 scuff on the crash bar (tiny loop of chrome tubing just large enough to protect the engine case)...

So what tcaused this you may ask?

The oil seal on the left side where the shifter shaft goes into the case had come loose..oil pumped out of the case in mass quantities and onto the chain where it was flug up onto the wheel, and also just blown back towards the rear wheel....Oil soaked tires do not create enough friction to keep control of  my 37hp beast.

Anyway, Fixed it and ready to ride again..of course now the wife ack wants me to sell..yeah right

:D

For those of you without the imagination to picture all this, what you need to do is imagine pee-wee herman falling off his little scooter in the middle of a busy intersection, then blaming it on mister tire being slippery.

That ought to be pretty accurate, plus or minus a few reality percentage points :)

edit - see skuzzy, I TOLD you this BBS is turning me into a retard.

Well, found out what is causing oil seals to fail (It's leaking other places now too), there is a hose on to of the valve cover..I assume it for "Positive Crankcase ventilation" or PCV.  It was crimped and producing alot of pressure inside the engine.

I had changes the configuration of my airbox/filter system and where the hose connects to the airbox was moved, obviously to a bad plave causing it to crimp. Oh well, problem solved for now I guess.

Calvin: Dad, how come old photographs are always black and white? Didn't they have color film back then?
Dad: Sure they did. In fact, those old photographs ARE in color. It's just the WORLD was black and white then.

Calvin: Really?
Dad: Yep. The world didn't turn color until sometime in the 1930s, and it was pretty grainy color for a while, too.

Calvin: That's really weird.
Dad: Well, truth is stranger than fiction.

Calvin: But then why are old PAINTINGS in color?! If the world was black and white, wouldn't artists have painted it that way?
Dad: Not necessarily. A lot of great artists were insane.

Calvin: But... but how could they have painted in color anyway? Wouldn't their paints have been shades of gray back then?
Dad: Of course, but they turned colors like everything else in the '30s.

Calvin: So why didn't old black and white photos turn color too?
Dad: Because they were color pictures of black and white, remember?
