just curious...is it normal for x800's to run at 55deg. cel.? saw that temp. on my friends rig and kinda got worried about it

I have an X850XT and it's been running REALLY hot. I can't remember the exact temp but in AH I was getting the "warning, overtemperature" warning popping up from time to time. Never used to happen when I ran 1024 textures but the move to 512 textures all loaded in memory seems to have pushed it harder. Frame-rates with the new version shot through the roof too though so might just be the card cranking out more frames. The second I stop AH I can open the temperature monitor and watch it plummet back to normal.... Thought it might be a computer circulation issue but everything else seems to be normal.

DirectX/OpenGL applications will push a video card harder as circuits are being used which never get used when you are at the Windows desktop.

I have an X850XT PE edition, but I ripped off the ATI cooler and replaced it with an Artic Cooler 5. Much quieter and cooler than the stock unit.
I also added a Zalman 'dead air' fan to move air around on the backside of the video card (also helps cool Northbridge and the RAM as well).
It s rare for my card to hit 45C.

To answer the question though, 55C is hot, but the high end GPU's are pushing those temperatures now.

i run my x800 pro at XT speeds 500/500 , and 55 is hot , ive seen as high as 47c before under load , but that is rare . 38

I'm thinking I'd better get mine looked at, either that or maybe the temperature sensor is spitting out the wrong temp. Mine pushes 65 C after some AH time.....

I have seen cards with the stock coolers on them get that hot Soda.

I was thinking of getting it checked out, to be honest, because I'd never seen one run so hot and the case seems to be moving air effectively. I'd had the "reducing GPU speed" warning a couple of times recently so I know my temperature probably peaked around 70 as that is where the alarm is set. An hour in the TA last night had me up to 67, dropping into the 40's once AH was closed.

My 6800GT gets into the high 60s or low 70s running 3D apps. If you're not getting crashes or other instability and you think you have decent case cooling (ie. you have both intake and exhaust fans that seem to work), then don't worry about it.

update.....he put a new arctic cooler on it and finally cleaned all the dust out of his case like i told him to.
#1,he's running 6 case fans
#2,he's a smoker (just guess what his fans were covered with)
#3,when you move as much air through a custom case as we do, you have to clean out the dust on a regular basis(not every 6-9 mos. like he was)
now his temps are back on par with what they were when he built it

when it heats up just spray water on it .
