Annoying Logic (or not)
« on: September 16, 2005, 01:26:29 AM »
1.) Why do I see tracers in my up view when I shoot and pull on the stick at the same time? AH is the only SIM/game where this occur.

2.) Why do I get constantly killed by explosions of my own rounds?
Example: Spit vs Spit, distance about 30 to 50 ft. I shoot the guy as he passes in front of me, I get killed. WTF? 20 mm round explodes on his wing, and I'm the one who's pilot get killed?
Lets say fragment (or two) would really fly 40 feet, hit my plane and penetrate engine and/or armored glass and kill pilot? And the other guy is happily flying away with little or no damage. How likely would that happen in real? Not once, but every single time you're closer than 50 feet or so.

 My brain hurts!

1) The tracers (actually vapor trails) do seem to be a coding error. They should be originating from the guns which would place them below the wings when pulling up and firing at the same time.

2) If you're at 50 feet (which would be 0 on the distance icon) you're so close you have no time to get out of the way of debris. So, you're most likely hitting pieces of the aircraft which would bring you down. Or, you're colliding with the aircraft just as you hit it with guns which would also bring you down.
Most of the people you meet in life are like slinkies. Pretty much useless, but still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

It is correct, what happens is when you are Pulling GS, I.E. Hi AOA your nose is not pointed the way you are travling.

So as the bullets lanch from the wings they fly at an upward angle to your flight path.  As you move forward, this makes the smoke trail rise in your view for a short time, then you pass back threw the smoke trail at some later point in time.

Basicly you are shooting accross the inside edge of a circle, with your viewpoint on the circle and the bullet not being shot tangentialy on the circle but wrather at an inward angle.

Sounds reasonable.

IIRC Hitech once said that debris doesn't do any damage. You get sounds only when flying through.
I forgot to mention I referred to DA, where collisions are off. So, debris and collisions can be excluded. Distance wise, both AC are in the same country (DA) and therefore the distance display is accurate to the yard.
I don't know the exact cutoff  distance, but once you cross it, you get killed 100% of the time.

There's no way in hell that blast of 20mm HE round would cause more damage to the AC 50 feet away, than to the AC where it actually explodes.

Its not debris that kills you.  Its the explosion of the 20mm.  I brought this up a while ago.  I think you should not be taking any damage from those explosions but some people think a 20mm = hand grenade

In anycase, what I think is happening is that after you get hit by your own ammo, killshooter probably kicks in making the damage you take even bigger.  Land with your gear up and while on the runway, fire a couple of 20s.  Not only they hit the grown in front of you but you will also die.

This is why it only takes 1 20mm somewhere close to an ack gun to kill it.  20mm = handgrenade on some targets.

IRL, this stuff happened tho -- if you were that close you WOULD have taken hits from debris. So, if AH models it based on the explosion, it doesnt really matter because the end result is the same.

I remember reading about a 38 pilot who dropped in hard on a Zero, hammered him from point blank, and flew through the wreckage. ALmost immediately, his r engine began revving, and overheated despite every effort he could make.

When he RTB'd, he found a sheet of japanese aluminum, pressure molded against the air intake of that engine like a perfect jet intake cover nowadays.

The end result is not the same. Debris would hardly cause instant pilot death every single time you cross the "magic" explosion cutoff distance.

I'd think there was an IRL threshold too -- but if you crossed it by coming too close to an exploding  fuel laden aircraft, you didnt get home to tell the story.

You missed the whole point.
It's about round explosions causing instant death to the guy 50 feet away, but do no damage on aicraft where they exploded.

No such thing IRL.

I had debries both kill me and mine kill closely following planes before. Actually the ones mine killed I bailed and they flew into  what was left of my plane

If the cannon round is a HE round, wouldnt be as damaging as a hand grenade? Or even more so?.

Not to question your intelligence, but you ARE shooting enemy planes, aren't you?
