I think it's an untenable idea.  Gadgets are limited in what they can do, and this one would not have the desired effect of significantly reducing alcohol related accidents.

In any event, it should be an option and not a required part of every car sold.  It may help those who don't want to drink and drive, or who need to know if they are too impared to drive (kinda like a HAL 5000 computer in the car, i.e. it could drive you where you needed to go if need be, while you play AH on the drive over.)  Otherwise imo this idea  won't stop drunk driving or even reduce it effectively.

didn't we try to ban booze once allready?

I seem to recall that back in the 80's there was a movement to have the breathalizer installed on the cars of people convicted of druk driving... I believe they even tried it in some small amount of cars.

oh... bet I could figure out a way around it pretty simply... bet there would be any number of chips that defeated it sold withing a month.

The computer in my car wouldn't let me drink and drive even with manual over-ride.

Breathalizers in every car?  Sounds like a horrible idea.  I prefer personal freedoms, and I'm happy to live with the consequences.  I don't care if they do it in Norway though...I don't live there.

Lazs...they do use the in-car breathalizer as a tool of punishment up here.  I had a friend a while back who had one installed in his Elky.  The thing was unreliable as hell (sometimes it blew positive when he wasn't drinking, sometimes it blew negative when he was drinking), and the installation did some funky things to his in-dash electrical.

sob.... I agree with you that personal freedom is much more important than personal security.   I think the founders felt the same.
