This one's heading up the florida straights towards the Key's now..  storm track sez final landfall between Galveston and Pensacola.

Just about the worst possible news for the folks that have already suffered enough...

Imagine what the NOLA refugees that chose to relocate to Florida would feel.  I see either a lot of new atheists, a lot of new fervently religious, or both.

Have lived within 5 miles of the coast my entire life. Had one hurricance come ashore here in all that time.. and I enjoyed every minute of it.

I did most everything wrong.. classic. Would probably do a few small things differently if faced with another. Should be noted I don't live in a city.. and if I did I would get the hell out before one hit.

Well its looking like LA/Tx border right now. The good thing about this track is it depends on the high on tx/la staying put. If it begins eroding, we should know in plenty of time to get out (yet again). The track with Katrina was more of a timing thing with a trough digging down to pick up Katrina. The speed of the trough was grossly screwed up in the early models which accounted for that big shift 3 days before landfall. Right now, it looks like a trough will only play a part at the end of the path. So it will be a timing thing that tells if it hits Corpus Christi or Lake Charles. Unless the trough moves through VERY fast in which case Rita will plow right over New Orleans again:cry

There's a big difference betwee "one the beach" and "within 5 miles of the coast". Heck, even 2 miles from the coast. Gulfport being the primary example right now.

Beach: trashed  2 miles inland: Houses quite livable.

Prayers ain't my thing. In this case, I'm making an exception.. can't hurt, might help, and I do pray to whatever diety that does the accounting these days that this new threat passes you folks by.

Over the weekend I filled both propane bottles, checked up on supplies... 5 gallons of water, month of canned goods, batteries, flashlights, vhf radio, crank-powered emergency am/fm radio, 3 loaded mags & 2 boxes of 100 shells for the 9mm, tools, duct tape, waterproof matches, candles, checked the generator and filled up the gas cans...


Then I woke up this morning to find out a Hurricane was headed for us.

Bump that water level way the hell up. 5 gal a DAY, minimum. Also a water treatment system is handy as hell.. the brita gravity pitcher works great for the water that comes outta your storage cans.

Get a couple of coleman lanterns too.. propane or the old white gas units.

Got both. Normally run tequila & vodka through the brita pitchers... more than enough spare filters laying around though. I know I'll need more water, but I ran out of containers. I'll grab a bunch more on the way home. At least I've got a reason to clean out the coolers now & clean the dust off all my camping gear (and the coleman lanterns).

I've also got one of these, but I haven't used it since I took it out of the box & tested it...

We have a high ridge over the state that will send rita over the keys and will keep her from coming further north... However, I wouldn't want to be in intended path afterwards..

But then were use to getting hurricanes..no biggie we deal with it logicaly and we don't loot..
