Nose Bounce, Need Help (Using HOTAS Cougar)
« on: September 20, 2005, 08:14:46 AM »
Ok, First of all, why da hell do nose bounces exist in AH? It is nowhere near it in a real life plane, sure thing I haven't flown a WW2 fighter but I am a glider pilot and have also flown prop planes aswell as having tried out a the Swedish Air Force's training Jet.

If I start a climb in, say a glider, pull back on the stick 30% untill I've nosed up 20 degrees and then move the stick to the center again the plane stays more or less at those 20 degrees.

Not the case in AH as we all know, what creates the effect in AH and why?

I need some serious help to get rid of nose bounces, never been this bad before, and my gunnery has never been worse.

Using a HOTAS Cougar so any recomendations from Cougar users would be very appriciated but also other peoples comments or settings would be nice to look at.

Need something done about it, just can't get rid of it.

Have you tried cleaning the POTS?  I have to take mine apart reguarly (every 3-6 months) clean with alcohol and give a light coat of dielectric lube.  Stops the sensitivity and spikes...

I increased the deadzone and reduced the damping to get ride of the nose bounce.
And before all : recalibrate in AH !

Btw a joystick don't work like a real stick
I can send you my stick.cfg if you want , as I don't know what nose bounce is :D
But I don't know if it work as I've a CH setup ...

reread this old HT post : http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5848&

Wilbus I  feel your pain. I owned a Cougar some time back and sold it. The pots & gimbels are JUNK which is what's causing the nose bounce.

http://cougar.frugalsworld.com/

I believe that url will shed some light on replacement kits & parts. As I recall, you can refit the stick for about $125 USD. Pretty lame considering the initial cost of the HOTAS :(

Thanks guys, I will try a different stick if I can. I recieved the Cougar only about 3 months ago though so don't know why it should be the problem.

I will not update it with 3:d party mods, most of those cost more then the Cougar itself (some 400 USD).

Straffo, please send me your Stick file so I can try it out and see!

Nose bounce makes gunnery near impossible.

Modas, I will try that. Like I said, still very new stick but it might be a problem anyway.

Thanks :)

Wilbus, same effect here with X36 setup, X45 setup and TM FLCS setup. I has been posted several times in the past. Doesnt matter your dead zone or whatever, the misterious nose bounces are there all the time. In the case of Me 262 the effect is astonishing.

Thanks for the link to the thread Straffo, kind of verifies what I have "felt". Combat trim is a good way to counter nose bounces. Maybe I should start using it and screw the "realism" thing in this area.

Wilbus, here's what I do a lot. Map combat trim to a button on your stick. Use it for brief periods (on for a second, then off) to instantly trim you for your given speed. Leave it off for most dogfighting, especially if you use flaps-biased planes. Then once you're lined up on an enemy's six, hit it again, so that you can set up the final shot in better control.

Turn off when done, rinse and repeat as necessary.

Rgr Krusty, will try it. Using manual trim knobs/wheels on stick so should be almost as fast though but will try. Nose bounce is what really disturbs me about AH :(

Frugalsworld is a great site for all things Cougar.

Krusty has it almost right, Combat trim is not accurate for all flight configurations. In some planes it will really screw you up.

You should be able to map trim to one of your hat switches. Apply a few clicks of down trim when you are trying to pull your nose up for the shot. This will force you to maintain constant back pressure on the stick because trim will be applying down pressure. When you get your nose where you want it stop and hold that back pressure. It should prevent your nose from bouncing up when you stop your stick movement.

Hey Wilbus

CT really helps. I am using it because NOT using it is putting you at a disadvantage in the MA. Trim and engine management are modeled very rudimental and generic. So, especially when flying 190s you are neglected an advantage concerning pilot work load compared to other planes in RL.

As for the Cougar. I got the UberNxt2 mod a few months ago - and its worth it! Even if it costs more than a new Cougar the improvement from moving from a regular Cougar to a modded Cougar is bigger than moving from a Saitek X-36 to a Cougar in the first place!

 - zero center play
 - much smoother springs
 - no wear and no spiking
 - precise control along the whole axis (-> improved my aiming tremendously)
Real men fly Radial!

having a nice and easy to use trim set up is the key, i have a heavily modified tm tqs,    which gives me a pot for each axis.
