Forecasts still calling for landfall near Matagorda. Cat 5 now but will drop back down on Friday the closer it gets to land. By the time it strikes according to NOAA it will likely be a medium Cat 4.

We are stocked and ready....only thing we didnt get that I overlooked were lantern mantles. Went to Walmart tonight thinking I might be able to find some. Heh....right. Walked thru the whole store just checking stuff out....not only did they not have any mantles, but the only canned goods they had left were cranberry sauce and spinach.....MMmmmmmm.

Got my sister out of Clear Lake today and she is with us out here on the NW side. We will most likely have winds of less than 85 mph and a lot of rain here.

All highways out of the city are parking lots at this point. I am supposed to work tomorrow but I will be damned if I am going to take 2 hours to get there.

Latest NOAA forecasts show a big shift to the East last night. Strike point is now on east side of Galveston and the bay. Which unfortunately means more storm surge and rain for New Orleans. Havent heard if they are still predicting it to lose strength on Friday though.

on the radio this morning they are getting calls from people leaving Houston.... some people that left last night at 2AM, had only gone 100 miles by 8:30. they also said that 30 of those 100 miles had came in the last hour.

I waited until today to start the "petroleum supply recovery" article I am working on, figuring that most of my contacts would have had time by now for things to settle down after katrian, have some time to speak and have at least some idea on refinery and pipeline recovery, local marketer/retailer recovery, etc.

Well, many contacts are based in Houston so they better be hauling out bellybutton of town and any revovery projections that would have been developed are out the ****ing windown right now. A lot of our non-Katrina impacted refining capacity in the Gulf is located in the anticipated path of Rita. If this thing doesn't do a 180 or drop three catagories in strenght it's going to be really really bad. In human terms, of course, as it would be if the hurricane hit anywhere on the seaboard. From an oil industry, debt and economy perspective... Let's hope for the best.

Yeah...traffic is a nightmare. All roads going west and north are packed....not just the freeways. Even the major sidestreets and secondary roads are packed. I work 5 miles from home and it took me an hour to get home today. Now I get to finish clearing space in the garage for the cars and boarding the windows. Wheee......

Well I just had a scary 18 hours. Rita was behaving badly. I checked the satelite image after the eclipse (3am cdt), and Rita was turning north much sooner than expected. I had these terrible visions of it plowing right over or just to the west of New Orleans. Not to wish it on Texas, but we just cant take another one right now. It looks like its again heading for Houston- Lake Charles. Be careful Houston - prayers are with you - lets hope it continues to weaken.

Yeah if your commin North hit Hwy 6. It was congested a lil in the morning at 2:30am. When I had to head north the traffic was bad but movement was a pretty constant 50-60.

When commin through B/CS and you need gas actualy try to come into town to get gas. The stations right along the HWY are running out and the ones in town actualy have gas. A few reports of some running out today but we do have a few small ones that still have plenty.

People here are freaking out. We are northwest of DFW about 70 miles south of the Red River. They are predicting Rita may still be a Cat 1 when it reaches us, 250 miles north of the coast. We have never seen a hurricane here.

We got word this morning that our entire grocery order was cancelled. It comes out of Houston and they couldn't get the trucks out. They recalled the trucks that did make it out and locked down the warehouse. I had planned a 2 week order in anticipation of Rita, now we're screwed and so is every other independant grocer.

Between 4 and 7pm tonight we had a run on the store. People were buying everything in sight. WalMart ran out of bottled water and they hit us next. Luckily. I had ordered extra water after Katrina and they have'nt totally wipe us out, yet. Our canned goods are pretty beat up, but not completely wiped. I expect by Monday, we will be nearly bare thruout the store, depending on how severe the storm is.

TXU bought 100 bags of ice today for their work crews to use. That means they are anticipating lots of power outages. Besides the high wind, there will be LOTS of tornados here. They are the real danger.

This could get interesting...
