Well... wow.

Good luck to you, your wife and all six, (especially in around 13 years time, ouch).

Thanks for all the kind words.  Those of you who mentioned how hard it will be are probably correct.  A grand/month in diapers alone.

This is as "public" as we've gone with it.
Our friends and family seem to think we could parlay our situation into all sorts of free stuff... food, formula, a vehicle... etc.  Stacy and I are hesitant to do anything like this since there are already plenty of people within our borders who need the help more desperately than us.

Those of you who mentioned abortion, (correct term: selective reduction) will you please come to Arizona, see our ultrasound, and tell me which healthy fetuses I should kill?  I appreciate that you are concerned for the overall pregnancy and so are we, but having to end the life of a perfectly healthy fetus is something neither I nor my wife is capable of.  Maybe my beliefs are old fashioned.... I think each one deserves a chance as long as it is healthy.

One other possibility is that one or more of the fetuses may fizzle out on it's/their own. Often, but not always, the woman's body will end the life of a chromosome deficient baby.  so there's 6 for now but by the end of the first trimester there may be less.  (She's 7.5 weeks along now)

We have been trying to have children for 10 years now.  Some may see this as a curse, I can see it as a blessing and nothing else.  I'm not blind to the potential problems and awesome responsibility(at least to what length I can imagine it) of raising 6 kids.  It's just that, at least for now, there are 6 lives there and we feel responsible for all of them.

We prayed, and our friends and family prayed that we would have children this time around.  God is not without a sense of humor.

My youngest daughter is now 6 months old; she was born 11 weeks premature.  My wife spent from week 25 to week 29 in the hospital after her water broke.  We seriously lucked out and the baby is doing very well.  I had a month to sweat the situation out and spent much of it studying prematurity and birth problems.

There are huge risks associated to prematurely.  Survival is only one element; significant disability is almost a bigger concern as it becomes very likely with extreme prematurely.  With multiples, early delivery is the norm.  Twins typically deliver around 34 weeks; earlier than that is where the serious risks become scary.  Triplets and beyond deliver even earlier and the risks go way up.  I’m very concerned for your family Steve.  I’m hoping that three or four of them “fade away” and give the others a good chance.

On the other hand, there was a local woman who was hospitalized at 16 weeks with sextuplets; she made it all the way to 28 weeks.  All six survived and are doing relatively well.  I think that they are about one and a half now.  They are major celebrities.  Dozens of volunteers help them daily and their church bought them a new house.  Sextuplets do happen; but the odds are frightening.

I’m half sick about this and am flashing back to what we went through…  We had an additional rare complication; 100 years ago my wife and daughter both would have died with certainty.

Even triples have a hard time surviving - with six there are bound to be serious complications. Are the doctors going to abort part of the fetuses?

I'm just happy you guys were able to get pregnant. So many couples I know havn't been able to - so whether or not it turns out to be 6 in the end or 3, the end result is the same. You got yr wishes granted.

Thanks Steve. It is amazing, though being a first time dad at 40 is a bit of a trip. Not as big of a trip as having 6 though :)

I saw a show about a family with 8 (at once), and they stayed ahead of things by being tightly organized. Each child had family responsibilities at the appropriate age, and everything ran on a set schedule. It was a close family, but it operated like a military unit/factory assembly line which kept the enormous potential for chaos to a minimum. The routine seemed manageable after the kids started getting older, but I can only imagine the first year or two. As I recall, all of the kids were physically and developmentally OK. Good luck man, and get help if you can! :)

Charon

BTW, the show was on 20/20 or 60 minutes or a show like that, and they followed the family from the first year with updates afterwards. In this one they were about 10  or 12 or so. You could probably get copies from the network if you can track it down. Similarly, you could probably call the parents to get some advice on how they got the system rolling.
