Dweeb question....what exactly IS Combat Theater?
« on: September 23, 2005, 01:34:38 PM »
Yes, I'm very new to AH...now up to a wopping 17 sorties, and want to know what CT is all about.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like the arena is set up with historical aircraft in a historical area/situation in mind.

If that's the case, is this run like a modified scenario where there are some rules, or is this just a 24/7 areana/plane set that there just to enjoy?  Are there ground vehicles or naval vehicles as well...not that I'd ever consider driving one;)

Also, are any arena settings different that what's in MA?

Thanks!

It's a 24/7 arena...

There are some unwritten rules/CT Etiquette, but I'll let the others explain this...

Yo, Fry!  CT is similar to the Axis v. Allied arena in AW.  The legend is that it was formed by a cadre of MA people who were irritated that the MA was non-historical in its realism and historical settings.  Hitech gave them their own arena to run, and this is it.  Most, if not all, of them have now faded away or returned to the MA.  The CT itself has never been nearly as popular as the MA.  When the CT was new and original, you could usually find 30-50 people here at prime time, and I personally have seen (twice) over 100.  Unfortunately, we never recovered from the transition from AH1 to AH2, which killed off all of our nice custom maps and which drew most of our veterans back to the MA to try out the new flight models.  As well, the novelty wore off....and there were other things that happened, too.  The topic is frequently discussed.

At present we are experiencing something of a resurgence, as the BK squadron from the MA has made it their business to hunt poor Storch.  This means that we have two squads that - for the past week, at least - have spent a fair amount of time fighting each other in the CT.

Most of us are proud that the CT, because of its much smaller population, can maintain a greater level of sportsmanship than you find in the MA (listen to the hoots as people read this sentence).  While not a perfect place to fly, I think you'll find it is usually a pleasant place to fly.  The setups change each week, and are created by the players.  We try to maintain a fine line between historical realism and play balance.  Read the MOTD on the clipboard to learn the settings for any given setup.  The arena runs 24/7; prime time, of course, is in the evening (although the Finns have a very active squad that often flies here during our afternoons).  Come try it for a few nights and see.  Bring your friends.  Bring your enemies, too (if you even have any).

Thanks for the info everyone.  If I get a chance, I'll see about dropping by later tonight:)

And Oldman, as a FYI, I don't thing I'm good enough yet to have made any enemies in AH yet;)  I'm still more like a pesky fly that just keeps getting swatted down every now and then, hehe.

I'm trying hard to enjoy the CT, and have had some good fights. A few months ago, I gave up after running into copious hording, vulching etc -- but this time I've not run into it at all. My 14 year old son, IMandos (who comes from a first person shooter orientation) likes CT lots more than MA because you can get into fights a lot faster and momre painlessly -- and I gotta agree.

I've run into 2 problems, though. Had a bad experience with a guy who literally BnZ'd my hurri till I was out of fuel -- 7 minutes of boredom, ended when I pulled up for a snap into his last HO attempt and he collided. Oh, well. Didnt even get the proxy on that one, and died when there wasnt any clear Finnish turf for ditching.

Second, I'm just completely outmatched (by everyone except that guy, anyway -- and I would have killed him on lag rolls if my gunnery wasnt TEH SUKAGE). I've been total fodder, and it gets old...

We're gunna keep trying, so look for the easy meat!!

Keep at it Sim. I know it can be very discouraging, but you ARE getting better even though you might not see it. Getting stomped buy guys better than you is like "sink or swim". Before you know it, you will start doing things without even realizing you learned it. If you ever need help, I'll pass on what little I know any time.

You lie like a rug sim.

I've run into you in the MA and your not fodder by any means.

I wish the CT was more active. After a week of 1-2 hour nights in the CT, I have no desire to go into the MA, which I've basicly given up on due to lack of intrest and apeal.

CT is a mini-MA with a limited planeset that generally tries to re-create a certain period or matchup.
Surrounded by suck and underwhelmed with mediocrity.
I'm always right, it just takes some poepl longer to come to that realization than others.

Thanks for the encourgement. Honestly, I posted after a generally downer day, capped off by an 0-5 CT run. My oppenent was very kind, and we even traded country/planes, but I'm not sure I even landed a ping in the entire series. That kinda thing can mess with yer head...

the CT is where the Grundgeherds and the BVM go to enjoy the first stages of ritual courtship and flirtations.

Its the start of something beautifull.
