When the pilot dies.....why does the plane blow up?
« on: September 28, 2005, 09:44:34 AM »
When we bail, the plane continues to spiral down.

When the pilot dies, the plane explodes.

Is it not possible to have the plane continue to fly?

The shere numbers of dweebs who'd follow a dead plane down to auger would be extreme :).

I like that idea it sure would mess a few people up. Also it would help make the game more real.

Because it's faster. It stops rendering an object on the screen, less to process. Less to compute (where it's going, how it's going to randomly fly), and because it totally sucked when that happened in WB2.5 (I think it was 2.5). The icon went all grey to indicate the plane was already dead (and not to shoot at it anymore) and the plane augered.

It wasn't that impressive, to begin with, in WB. I kind of like the AH method. It's more like the plane exploding due to gas tank rupture, and so forth. When you think about it, many planes had the pilots sitting on top of the gas tanks. Whatever was going to hit them had a chance of passing through them into the tanks (a small chance :P ). Then again I also like the gratifying BOOM when you really nail the sucker in your sights.

It happens because all flight calculations are Client Side.  This means that which direction your plane is going and at what speed is calculated by your computer.  This information is then sent to the server.

If you die, you aren't over there to calculate where the plane is going.  So that's why it dissappears.

The client could still continue to report the continued flight path (unless the player had logged off)..........much as it does during blackout.

Indeed the player could be given an out of body experience (forced F5) after slumping dead on the controls to giving max throttle, forward pitch and full roll of choice. (watching his own death dive).

Much as he sees his aircraft drop away after he has bailed........

(hmmm what happens when we bail from a perfectly fit aircraft set to auto climb?)

Truth is folk want to get into their next ride immediately and our FE's are over stressed if they have to report two totally different flight paths. (the new one and the remains of the old)
