sliding off back of carrier
« on: September 30, 2005, 11:00:09 PM »
Every once in awhile, when landing on a carrier, I end up sliding off the back of the carrier.  Tail hook is down, good landings, but i still slide off back of carrier.

Alot of people will tell you different, but the truth is that will only happen if your throttle isn't all the way closed when you catch a wire.

I've had this many times, almost as if being catapulted backwards. Strangest was landing in F6F, getting the reload message and while sitting patiently for about 10 secs I suddenly just fell through the deck.

Also when spawning on CV I sometimes just fall through deck.

Ths 'slingshot' back off a CV after landing is a well known bug/feature. It happens when you caught a wire, but for some reason, the wheel brakes are not on (ie throttle not completly idle, 1 or 2 gears broke).

To avoid this effect, just remove hook as soon as you touched down. Or land without deploying hook altogether. Dont need it for most of the planes anyway.

When falling through the deck hit tower fast. If your quick enough, you still get the 'landed successfully'. Btw, you also fall through the deack when CV is sunk while you sit on it.
21 is only half the truth.

Our squad every year does a "Doolittle raid" by all of us landing B-26's on a CV then  taking off, forming up and low level bombing something.

This last raid, we were all on the aft of the CV, and all at once WHOOSH  off we went laterely into the drink.

We re-upped, and landed again, trying to go faster this time, and it did it again.  all throttles OFF,   and obviously the hook had nothing to do with it.
You know that your landing gear is up and locked when it takes full power to taxi to the terminal
