Lock-ups with Gforce
« on: October 03, 2005, 08:08:47 AM »
I just installed a Geforce FX 5500 OC (PCI card) into my older HP pavilion PC, so far this is the only upgrade to this system.

Im getting lockups in the middle of game however, and Im wondering what are some of the possibilities that could be causing this to happen.  I get 50+ FPS in the game, it just seems to freeze up when either somone talks on VOX, or I am typing things in chat buffer.

Im also wondering what boxes I should check in the video settings with this card. (IE: Max Texture Size, Preload in System Memory, Preload in Video Memory, and Preload Skins) so that I won't be running too heavy on my system.

I have...

HP Pavilion a305w
2.7GHz Intel Celeron Processor
256 MB RAM
DirectX9
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 OC

thanks!

Could be a whole lot of reasons for what you describe.  Texture swapping from the video card to the main memory (especially with only 256MB of RAM, you'll be hitting the hard drive alot) is one, another possibility is the wrong driver for the video card, another possibility is a problem with the sound, and there are probably a half a dozen more I could come up with by thinking a little more.

Try sending Skuzzy a copy of your DX Diagnostic report or post it on the BBS.

Set the maximum texture size to 256 or less.  Disable skins in the game.  Set the detail slider in the game more towards performance.
Also make sure you have the 61.77 drivers loaded for that video card.  Later drivers will cause stutters, freezing, and general instabilities.

The 256MB of system RAM is going to be the bottleneck.  Make sure you turn off/disable as much as you can in Windows.

Some ads and popups but it's got all the drivers and utilities you'll ever need for your vid card.

This is copy and pasted from Silat's help file... sure he won't mind.

Download the driver, save it then follow the directions below.

________________

Now get this:
http://www.driverheaven.net - Put it on your desktop

Now install DRIVER CLEANER

Go to add and remove programs and remove all references to ATI or Nvidea.

Restart in safe mode. Usually by clicking the f8 button during reboot.

DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING if windows asks.

.

Run DRIVER CLEANER AND CLICK THE CLEAN button.

Then restart. DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING once again. It's ok, all will be well :)

When you reach your desktop click on the driver you downloaded and follow prompts.

Restart..

If you have any problems read the helpfile that comes with DRIVE CLEANER.

To get the official ones from the Nvidia website, go through the selection process to get to the driver downloads for your OS.  When the latest and greatest pops up on the screen, look over on the left.  There is a link for "Archives".  Click it and it will take you to a large selection of drivers.

If he follows the link I gave him named '61.77', it will bring him right to the driver he wants.

It is also important to disable the onboard video chip AND unload/disable the drivers for that chip.

61.77 drivers are defintely the one to use with that card.

Also as mentioned before. You need more ram....boost it to 1 Gb if you can. Its cheap.

You should be up Fragg'n friendlies in no time.
