Take a look at these pingplotter screenshots, odd issue.
« on: October 03, 2005, 10:01:46 AM »
I've been having an odd issue with my comcast cable connection the last week or two. Everyday around 4pm to 11pm my ping times to any gaming server jump up 150-250 , then drop back down suddenly.
This particular server pings 15-20 for me most of the time.  I've taken some pingplotter screenshots at different times of the day. Take a look at these and tell me if they give any information on why my ping time jumps from 16-20 on average all the way up to 200-250.

This 1st shot is around 8 am and everything looks fine.

This 2nd shot is 11pm when the ping times go up.

And this third shot is around 1am and things are back to normal.

Could cable tv usage run my pingtimes up or is tv on a different frequency? Could it be due to someone sucking all the bandwidth using torrents. It happens at primetime like the whole world comes home and turns on their pcs killing the bandwidth and then goes back to normal when primetime is over, like they all logged off.. Any ideas?

This kind of behaviour is very common with cablemodems. Been there, done that.

Yep, that is pretty common for cable networks.

That's common with cable because most cable companies oversell each area. Say a neighborhood is rated for 20 connections with 6Megabit per household. They would sell about 60 to 80 connections and still retain the "6Megabit" line.

That is why I will always go with DSL over cable.  DSL is by no means perfect, but what is mine is mine.

DSL, and not just any DSL isp either.

Do some shopping around. Find out who's got a decent ping to where your headed.

If you have to bribe friends into letting you do a ping to your DOD server, go for it.

Shop around, dig for dirt, talk to others who've had them as an isp for at least a year.

Cable may have faster overall download speeds (offpeak)

But DSL tends to be a lot steadier.

report it to the engineering dept of the cable co

if they know what they are doing, they will investigate.. you are not the only one with an internet issue .. it could easliy be an amp or agc whacking out (this time of year with huge day/night temp swings play havoc on cable plant) as it is an overloaded network.

ask for a line-tech to show up at your house when it is happening, an evening service call.
the louder you scream the better

here is my cable modem ping at 19:48
