I was just channel serfing.  Looking for news.  I happen to land on MTV.  Some "artist" we singing a retreaded version of, Whats Going On.  A blatantly, anti war protest song, from the bad old days.  For the first time since this started, I feel discouraged.

I believe Bono of U2 re-recorded "What's Going On?".

Their initial intention was to release the song to raise funds for the fight against aids.

Oh do you? Gee that's tragic...

War is bad, man. Who cares if someone's singing an anti-war song? It certainly echoes my sentiments. Right now I have a friend seriously considering naval service, in part ot avoid being drafted into the ground forces in case it ever comes to that.

These are scary times, and there's a lot hanging in the balance. War would upset that balance.

Hey! ispar.  diddly off.

Over looking the obvious insult to the United States Navy, for a moment.  Your friends attempt at cowardice makes no sense in the face of what happend aboard the USS Cole.

Oh... and Easymo, I know quite a few people that I served with in the Navy that joined during the Vietnam war rather than take the chance at being drafted by the Army. No doubt about it, our life expectancy at sea is better than that of the guy in the trenches.

MTV is the poison of my generation.
It has drained most from spirituality and individuality, turning them into drones who must follow the "cool" herd. Removing what makes them individuals, and turning them into customers.

Welcome to my pitiful generation. Most of you are lucky to not have lived it. Sometimes I put MTV, and I can only feel sadness at the emptyness of their faces.

Continuing my earlier post...

It's a different man that can look another in the eye and kill him. Not every man is up to this one grisly task but many can serve the interests of this country and the military. It's not cowardice to be aware of your limitations.

You are taking the piss, surely?

You heard it here first - MTV is the root of all evil! Destroy that heinous soul corrupting influence!

'What's going on' is an excellent tune by the way. The new version isn't too rough either.

On a side note, what's with the melodramatic, sound-bite ridden crap posted on these boards recently? It's like a think tank for some league of two-bit journalists.

Shut yer gahddamn, traps ladies!  Save it for the Naz...er terrorists.  The one I love is "Take your anger and focus it".  I work in tech support, should I focus it on the clients?  Might get me fired.  May relieve some stress though.  Can I focus it on my cat?  Wife won't like that.

For the record easymo, litte of this applies to you, or anyone else that has or is serving in their countries military.  You've "been there, done that".  I suppose I'm getting sick of geeks that are going to be sitting on the chesterfield, watching the conflict on CNN, try and sound like a Regimental Sgt. Major, or some toejam.

When it comes to meaningless, patriotic slogans, I'm not a huge fan.

Draft...??? That reminds me of J Candy in Stripes saying he enlisted to avoid the draft...!! ROTFL!! Jesus... I hope they give him a broom and MAYBE a floor buffer.

xBAT

Draft...LOL Good Lordy... I think I almost pissed myself.
Of course, I only see what he posts here and what he does in the MA.  I know virtually nothing about the man.  I think its important for people to realize that we don't really know squat about each other.... definately not enough to use words like "hate".

Nope, but then it isn't exactly cowardice. He simply doesn't want to serve in the ground troops. I think that the fact that one of the positions he is interested in is the emergency personnel on board ship speaks for itself about his "cowardice." The other two? Technician or pilot. He has the brains, and he has the balls for either. I suggest you do not slander my friends before you really understand their motivations.

Avoiding Army service is hardly cowardice. If he were a coward, he would run away to Canada, wouldn't he? Of course, not all those who run to Canada are cowards, but that's a different argument. He wants to serve; he wants to help. He doesn't want to serve in the Army. Simple as that.
