How do you stop PS from starting a new layer every time you draw a panel line?  

Also if you upsize the file to 2048x2048 to work on it, do you also increase the dpi from 72 to 144?

1) I don't know why it would do this. For me, it makes a new layer whenever I paste something (and puts the pasted thing on a new layer). It makes a new layer when I add text. However, when using pencil/pen/brush/airbrush etc it always just puts it on whatever my current active layer is. I'd try starting a new file and seeing if the same thing happens. Shut it down, open it up again, and/or check your settings.

2) Several people have found out that it does not help to work in 2048x2048 and then down-scale it. It actually hurts because of the way panel lines show up and rivets and finer details. It's best to work in 1024x1024, because then you know exactly how it will look, and can work on it/tweak it until you are happy.

Fencer, you have a pretty new version of Photoshop I think, right?

I'm at work, so I can't give very specifics, but I'll try to go off of memory to help.


The reason photoshop is making seperate layers is that at default, the line tool doesn't create lines, it creates line SHAPES. Each shape is a new layer. In the bar at the top, next to where you pick your line style, there's like, 3 boxes side by side, and the first box is pushed in. You need to push in the 3rd box and then it will create lines. I can't really explain it without being at home, but hope it gives you some sorta direction....

Thanks Guys.  :aok  It was a settings problem Krusty, and Knite was correct in what he thought it was.  I appreciate it and will probably have a few more questions as I start attempting to skin.

I've only used 6.0 on campus, and only a few times at that. At home I've got 5.0.

It depends. Depending on whether you are currently a college student and can currently buy the student discount version, you might get it cheaper. It also depends if you campus carries a full version or a "stripped down" a.k.a. "lite/light" version, which many do for PS. I was lucky enough to attend one community college that had student discount prices but full software packages. I have a full and operational Visual Basic 5.0 (not that I've used it much since I got it) and a full and operational Photoshop 5.0. I fear, however, that if I buy any nowadays my current option is a stripped down "student evaluation" version.

EDIT: I thought it was only $500 or so?

I use Jasc Paint Shop Pro.  Its about $70 new I think.  It doesn't have as much gizmos and features as PS, but it gets the job done just as well.
