Hang, lasz:
Beetle is right, most 2 lane sections have speed limits, most 3 lane sections do not. Since they're working on making all parts of the autobahn 3 or even 4 laned I wouldn't say that it's being neutered.

and lasz, none of the 2 major parties would ever propose a general speed limit. The influence of the car lobby over here can probably be compared to that of the NRA in the states. None of the 2 could afford the inevitable loss of votes.
Say what you want about left leaning parties, our past chancellor (who is a social democrat) was known as the car-chancellor. They may love nannying people, but not in this regard.
And in 10 years.. I'm not planning on having kids yet.

Like I said in an earlier (locked) thread, many Yanks on this board base their opinions of Europe on inaccurate, incomplete and out of date information.

Well, that's more than some people who hold forth about Germany have done!

I was once in a plane that flew over Iran, and I was able to see the landscape below, so I'm fully qualified to comment on all Iranian matters.

How do you get "for your own good" to mean safety only?  it could mean safety... it could be economic or it could be preservation of resources...

The nannies will use any of a number of excuses to curb individualism and freedom.  

redwing... I hope you are right but I have faith that there is no deed too outrageous for a government to try... you of all countries should know that.

There are alot of posted speed limits on the Autobahn now.  I guess it depends where you are in Germany.  The unlimited speed limit sections are much shorter then they were 25 years ago.  (on the 3 and 4 laners too)

Around Munich there are large stretches of unrestricted Autobahn.  They only tend to restrict it when there are major sliproads joining the Autobahn (even when it's restricted it's still faster than 55mph!) or two lane in congested areas.  Nice, and sometimes scary, when you see a Porsche fly by at 150+mph.

Thing I don't like about German roads is no catseyes!

 That's what I thought. All the 3-laners radiating from Munich seemed to be unrestricted when I last drove in that area in 1999.
