Edwards AFB Airshow
« on: October 22, 2005, 07:16:39 PM »
Once again it's time for one of those aviation things that can only happen in Southern California...  Edwards AFB Airshow.

Below is a link to all of my photos worth sharing from todays action, and there was A LOT to see. Unmanned aircraft such as Global Hawk and JDAMS, the F22 Raptor on the ground and in flight, Including a heritage flight with the F22 and Gen Chuck Yeager in the P51D. Various Nasa Research craft on the ground and in the air... Its endless.

If you have any questions about what you're looking at, just ask.

Also, when you're look at the B-17, you're going to get a (first for me) look inside the Ball Turret.

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed photographing them!

Thank god I didn't have to work the airshow this year. Having 4 wisdom teeth pulled seemed like a more enjoyable outting. Plus no F-15s flying so what's the point of showing up.

They had the NASA F-15 with the canards on it... It was pretty badass.  Sure, not a 15 in the pure form, but well worth seeing.

Anyhow, I'm glad you didn't have to work it too... I always feel bad for all those poor souls in the food booths and parking cars.  I go out of my way to give a sincere thank you or what ever I can do to be sure all those AF boys and girls know that I know their real job isn't pushing T-shirts and Hot Dogs, or parking cars.

Thanks for all you do.

Those bastages did fly the F-15 Active this year. I didn't see that on the airshow schedule. I may have to sneak out there tomorrow to take a look.

Working the airshow isn't too bad really depending on where your working. The guys and gals parking cars have the worst part of the airshow. They were scheduled to work 2 16 hour days along with the cops on base. I was scheduled to work a booth this year since there is no longer any Air Force F-15s on Edwards. Since they closed our squadron in Feb I've just been sitting down at Falcon waiting for orders. Funny how it worked out that the earliest opening for getting my wisdom teeth pulled was on the 21st though. Really didn't wanna be seen in an F-16 squadron booth.

As a rule, everything on the schedule didn't happen and everything else did.  I have a couple good snaps of the F15 Active.

The schedule was a useless document.  Trust me, Its like they made it up for the website and then burned it.

To be honest Kurt that seems like a daily ritual at Edwards. Half of what our flying schedules said and what we did were two different things. It really doesn't surprise me much. You'd think the Air Forces primary test wing would have their watermelon together.

BTW I'll tell the black guy that's standing in front of your photo of the Zeke thanks alot for ya. He isn't all that bright at times. Picture 1820.

HAHA, Well, I was happy to see the interesting things I did see.  When I realized the schedule had nothing to do with reality I got a little frustrated, but still it was a great show.  Sadly, since the B-1b wasn't on the schedule that I had, I only got to watch it from the car as I was leaving.  Kinda made me wonder what else I missed in that last hour.

All in all a great time, and again, thank you to you and all those on the base for letting us come in, sit in the shade of a C-17 wing and watch some of what its all about.

I enjoy nothing more than Aviation Photography and Military airshows are the cornerstone of my hobby.  Thanks for making it possible.

I really need to make a dedicated effort to attend an Oceana Naval Airstation Airshow in Norfolk.  Been to plenty of the Langley AFB shows, plus I drive through there everyday and see the F15's fly all the time.  They are awesome!  I like to time my drive so they fly about 100 ft over my car when landing.  Maybe that's just crazy, but it's the closest I've been to one active.    I am looking forward to seeing the F22's flying around.  The F15's regularly (these are 20+ yr old planes) kick in afterburner and go vertical, like a rocket!  To this day that's something that makes the jaw drop,  plus they are completely aerobatic.   I can't seem to get my son as enthused about them as I am, but it could happen.

Edwards AFB is another place on my must visit list.  Thanks for the Pics!

Regards,

Malta

Kurt negative I didn't get out there. I'm still taking meds for my wisdom teeth and really didn't feel up to it. I really only enjoy watching the F-15 fly anyway. Seeing the Raptor and all the other birds just doesn't do it for me. I guess I'm partial to the F-15 since I've worked it for the past 11 years.
