ICANN charges a fee for domain registration. It's not what I would call expensive. It also covers the costs of ICANN (registation, root servers, etc.) and very little else.
In the USA, the phone companies install and pay for the physical layers of the internet. When you (in France) register a domain, the transport of data to and from the root servers costs money. ICANN pays the phone companies for that transport.
The rest of ICANN's budget comes from US taxpayers. Like me.
What's this about the internet not being a place for free exchange of information? Who is shutting down your website? Or limiting access to you? It doesn't happen here. Even illegal activities are discussed on the 'net. Not very smart, since the authorities can see the information, too, and use it to make arrests. BUT, we Americans are still fairly picky about free speech. You might get criticized for saying something, but you still have the right to say it.
Has that changed in France? If so, TAKE BACK YOUR COUNTRY!!!
