HTC, would it be possible to make a short "gouge" in the dirt when a plane ditches? Make it say, 3-5 plane lengths long (not too long). Make it show up for wheels-up landings on runways, too, as this would leave marks as well.

Second idea: Is there any way to make planes that ditch on water sink after 20 seconds or so? There have been times when I've ditched in water and just sat there watching the fight around me, or watching the enemy try to get the kill on me, or what-have-you. Might be a bit more realistic if we limited this "sit and watch" time to 20-30 seconds, after which time the plane sinks under water. If you're still in when it's al the way under blub-blub you're dead and in the tower.

I like those ideas, especially the first. After all, a ditching plane could be compared with a "bomb", the bombs leave craters too (for a certain time) so the plane might be able to do so too

Another thing that bugs me about bailing over water is the whole walking on water deal.  Maybe if you're not within a certain distance of a friendly/enemy boat or land when you tower you should get a "You have drowned" message rather than a "You have been captured" or "you have ditched" message.

Now that I think about it I'm not sure (somebody tell me) if dying or bailing successfully has an effect on perks...

With perks? I don't know. With score? I believe so.

P.S. Pilots had flotation devices. You're not walking, you're swimming. You won't drown, you'll just starve to death for a few days if nobody comes to pick you up.

I think your first idea is awsome. But on the second idea way not just have the plane just go right in to the water, instead of it just sitting there.

Because historically most planes actually floated when ditched on water. For a short time, that is (which is why I suggest 30 seconds -- that's pretty short). Typhies were notorious for going straight to the bottom (big scoop) and hurricanes had a bad rep as well (big belly scoop). Maybe model certain ones to go right under in 5 seconds, if they historically had this characteristic

Quite fun ideas but personally I'd see the time being spent on important things, such as getting ToD done  ;)
