Photography: My favorite sports shots of this fall
« on: October 30, 2005, 08:24:04 AM »
I am finding that moving subjects is much more challenging than stationary subjects when shooting.  I've also discovered that you might get 1 good shot out of 20 when shooting moving subjects :)  Here are my "best of the best" shots of this year (I was the team photographer for my each of my sons teams), after roughly 2200 pictures, of only which 10% were kept, I've narrowed it down to these few..none of these have been altered and I do realize a few could be altered to make them that much better...constructive criticism welcome!

I would have  to say my favorite is this one:

The one where he is diving is probably my favourite, followed by the Heisman-like pose making some nifty moves in a crowd of tacklers and blockers.

Great shots Rip.

Waaaaay over my requirements.  Too big too.

Nice though if you are doing serious photograhy...I'd just use mine for snapping shots of the kids around the house or at the beach etc....maybe some "other" types of shots too.  ;)

Thats how I started out digitally-speaking....its like a boat, you get 2-foot-itis...next thing you know, your "requirements" increase. In my case, my Canon G6 7.1 megapixel couldn't keep up with the speed I needed while shooting football.

Of course, now I'm reading about the Nikon D200, and drooling...but I have to get a few years out of this D70s or the wife will literally shoot me. :)

Nice shots there!

Curve,

Check out the Kodak digital cameras. They do just fine for the vast majority of household photography. The equipment they provide makes it easy to download the pictures and recharge the camera to boot. I've got a 4 meg version and it takes great pictures inside it's limitations. One of the limitations is that it is rather hard to see the display in bright sunlight so you have to use the old fashined way to aim the camera.

Thanks, that one would have been my favorite, Sandy, however its slightly out of focus. I had the wrong autofocus setting (Nearest subject rather area-focus) and it picked up the gent on the far left, nearest me.

Totally agree.

Quite awsome picture.

As for the Soccer pictures, I like the one where the kid has just kicked the ball, he looks like an adult pro at that picture.

I even like it even though I hate soccer, such a sissy sport :D (takes cover).

I love digital photography aswell. Using a Zoom camera, Kodak DX 6490, it's about two years old now, was my first camera ever, takes great shots but it is getting too slow for me as I am getting into photography more, specially sports, outdoor and animals, specially birds.

Looking at the Canon EOS 350D but it will be some time before I can afford one, it is definatly on my list though.

Awesome pics Rip!

I'm jealous, tho. You get to play outdoors.

My daughter is into gymnastics.. indoor sport.. and the Gymnastics governing body prohibits flash photography during meets, so I have been playing around with good Ol' 35MM to find the combination aperture, film speed, and shutter settings to get something that will work.

I'll post some when I get my scanner back online.

Matter of fact, I think I'll sneak off to the local camera show and see if I can swindle somebody out of a Minolta AF 300MM f1.7  :)
