Rifles, Granades, and paratroopers
« on: October 30, 2005, 11:40:30 AM »
ok the paratrooper part is played by computer controlled AI models, well why not players. Let me Explain, with this feature you are able to sit in a goon with 9 other players waiting to be dropped over your target, when you are released you are equiped with a pistol, M1Grand Rifle, and about 2 or 3 granades. Lets say about 30 of these paratroopers are realesed in a enemy town then they can raise alot of hell. Plus you can spawn out of the Base if the barraks are still up, to kill the paratroopers. Also these guys are able to cap bases as well.

I think its a cool feature that will increase the popularity of the goon.

It's called "Day of Defeat". There's even a new version out for HL:Source. It's cheap, too! One time price, don't have to subscribe!

But you're in the wrong game and in the wrong forum.

I think the "idea" is kinda cool, but then you would turn AH2 into a first person shooter, instead of a combat flight simulator. I wouldn't want to ride in a goon for 1/2 an hour or so to be dropped into the middle of a furball over a town with a bunch of flak panzers sitting in it.

I think if I'm going to play a first person shooter I'll stick to Ghost Recon or something like that.

Yeah, great idea, pick up 10 players, put them in a goon for, say.. 10 minutes of flying (but it could be way more than 10 minutes) while they do absolutely nothing, just sit there chatting, and then the goon is shot down and they are all back in the tower... 12 minutes of wasted game time, without doing nothing...

Plus, this is basically a flight sim... most of the people wants to fly... there are other game if you want to play the grunt...

No, thanks.

Like it's been said, it's not a bad idea. Just doesn't really fit into this game.

What it woudl do is bring more players into Aces High. More players means more $$$.

I mean, from a business and marketing point of view, Aces High would  attract hundreds more to play.

Imagine: Hop in a M3 - drive to an airfield with buddies.  Hop out, then attack the airfield with tank support with buddies in M-8's, Panzers and alike.  Towed artillery opens up on the airfield. Run for cover as an enemy tank fire on us.  Enemy troops coming out of airfield barracks.  Running across the field, grenade and shoot those manning gun positions.  Running in between rooms and houses routing out the enemy soldiers before their barracks are taken down.  Then rushing the map room and capture the base.
It would completley change the gameplay as we know it now.  I like it!

It wouldn't change the gameplay, it would change the game: what you describe is not AH anymore, it's Call of duty or Brothers in arms!

Once again: WW2 online.

Impossible to seize the immense (if i said right).
AH2 is air combat orienting online sim, WW2ol is ground combat orienting online sim. AH2's ground stuff is weak but air stuff is fine, WW2ol's ground stuff is fine but air stuff is weak.
I like AH's way.

Too bad you haven't been playing long enough to remember HiTech's thoughts on adding FP player controlled troopers.  I'm sure you can find it in the SimHQ archives in an interview he did with them a few years back.

In the interview he did want to add in FP player controlled troopers that would fight it out for control of the bunker.  He even mentioned that submarines would also be an eventual addition to the game and also outlined how they would possibly work in the game.

Sadly, I think the development of ToD has put these two ideas on the back burner for now.

I do remember talk about that ack-ack... and the fact that all these years later we don't have it is a testamony to the fact that it really has no place in the current AH system. Maybe in AH5 or AH10, but we have AH2.

It wasn't matter of not having a place in the game, if that was the case, HiTech would have never had initiated the idea of player controlled FP troopers or submarines.  The lack of resources and time because of other projects (initially it was pushed back to concentrate on adding bomber formations) have kept pushing both ideas in further and further back on the development cycle list.

Well just talking about something, openly discussing that there are endless possibilities in the future, doesn't mean that HT actually had sat down and planned these very things out. It could be that he just had an idea and he was open about it. Ideas don't always turn out to be feasible, I've learned from life. :)
