rivet spacing help?
« on: October 30, 2005, 03:33:56 PM »
On a 190 how close should the rivets  be? I'm finishing up my 190a8 template with some rivets... But I don't know if I like 'em. I've got them to 500% spacing (1 every 5 pixels). Looking at the default 190a8 skin they're 1 every 3 pixels but I think that's too much.

Then I started second guessing myself lol. So, regardless of how apparent they are in the final product, just for the purpose of MAKING the rivets, how close would you say I should make them?

Based on photos in the Osprey "Production Line to Frontline, Fw 190" book, 1 to 3 wouldn't be too close.  Page 49 shows a wing being riveted, and although the spacing varies, they seem to average less than 1 inch apart.  If 1-3 looks too noticiable, just give them less contrast relative to their surroundings.

Well I know that in real life they were very close, and very small. But one must strike a balance when doing skins, especially when 1 pixel in a skin is about 2 inches square in real life (or something close to that). I was more asking what a good balance would be. Some parts of my 5 pix spacing look good. Some parts don't look so good. Specifically the upper wing, which I'm going to redo in a minut.

I use... 1 pixel rivet two pixel space 1 pixel rivet 2 pixel space for regular rivet lines. it seems proportionately consistent when I compare it to airplanes I see at work.

Thanks... I went back and tried that. It looks more consistent, for sure. Most of my recent skins have had the rivet detail way way down (subtle, I even blurred the heck out of them). However, when making a template, one needs the stock item, pre-blurred :D

P.S. Once I've made a little progress on the actual skin I might release the template if anybody wants it. There aren't that many 190a8s to skin, but we certainly don't have all of them. Might encourage more A8 skins, no?

Templates are usually panel lines and rivets.  I know some include little extras that make the template easier to understand or work with.

Yes.. a template in this case would be the general outline of the major parts on different layers, as well as panel lines, and rivets, etc. You take it, put your own effort into making a skin, but a lot of the "hard" stuff is done already for you.

Yup, that seems to be the most common layout people use.

Some of my rivets are guesstimated... I used the default 190a8 as a rough guide. I did all the panel lines by myself, though. I used actual line drawings of 190a8s to get the proportions right. Oddly, there were more panel lines than there should have been. After checking some scale models I left a few panel lines off (which did not show up at all on the various models I checked)
