Dare I say Noob?
« on: October 31, 2005, 08:05:21 AM »
Hey all,
Hope this is the right forum for this.

Just wanted to drop a line.  I've been thinking about playing online and wanted to get some feedback.  It's been a long time since I've played air combat games (I was there the day that Air Warrior (sob) signed off) and was wondering what the community out there was like.  I see that there are a lot of choices for games featuring online air combat and was wondering what the community thought about the different games.  (Also, I saw the thread on the weapons - nice - and decided that I must not be the only nut out there)  Any recommendations and/or feedback?

This is the off-topic forum.
Aces High General Discussion is where you'll find what you want to know.
As for the game, there's a free 2 week trial, 60MB or so.  You can try it and see for yourself, it's always better than any advice.

STEEEEP learning curve, assuming you flew relaxed realism in AW.

It takes some time to get the hang of the flight model etc. but it is well worth it if you are a flight sim fan.

I've been here since 2001...and I still suck.

Welome.

There are also free Head to Head rooms of up to 8 players.  Good for getting your feet wet a bit, but the real fun is in the Main Arena.

When you start up your two week trial, check out http://www.netaces.org.  It has a ton of stuff to get you up to speed on everything from the interface to basic to advanced flight stuff.

Thanks for the tips (and the link).  Will try the Training arena and get my feet wet.  I really had a good time in AW (back in the day) and have been "out of town" for a while since 9/11.  See you in the air.

Eden, once you download the game, there is an offline part that you can try to your heart's content without starting the two week trial.  At least you can learn to take off, land, head positions, mapping joystick etc., etc. without wasting the trial time.  There are also drones you can shoot down to get some idea for the lead required.  I was an AW RR flyer- there is a big difference here.  After figuring out the flight controls and commands, you can use the trial period to get shot down and say "Huh?" a lot.  Heck, after 5 months I'm still in that mode.
