My cousin came up to visit for a few days.  He's going to school down in Las Vegas.  He's about 21.

When he, my father and I were sitting talking, the subject of beer came up.  My cousin has been to several cities in Europe (east and west) and feels that he has tried enough beer in his lifetime to be an expert on it.  I have to laugh

As he spent a half hour explaining why a beer that he had in Prague was the best beer in the world, I was thinking about what the best beer I'd ever had was.  I mean, I don't have as much experience as this young man.. but I was in the military for 8 years... but nobody really does much drinking there.

As I tried to pick my favorite beer, I began to realize that the exotic weren't really moving me.  All of my favorite beers were a result of the situation.. rather than the beer.  When the beer drinking was the main priority, I enjoyed it less.

I simply chose the times when the right beer hit the spot.  Like once when I was out pulling a stump at my father's house.  It was about 90 degrees that day and we were sweating like a couple of stuck pigs.  We took a break and dad asked if I wanted to try a new beer... "Tequiza".  I'd seen it advertised and thought "why in the hell would he buy a budweiser product?".  As we sat on the deck, the light-weight of the beer combined with the subtle lemon-lime-tequilla taste really hit the spot.  Beer doesn't usually do it for me when I'm dehydrated.. but this one hit it.

I have to say I have a fondness for three beers in particular:  Guinness, Black Butte Porter and Widmeer Hefeweisen.

Guinness intoduced me to nitrogenated beer.  It is still one of the smoothest, creamiest beers you can have.  The only downside is that you don't burp when you drink it.  Well.. that's a downside if your drinking with buds... not so much if you are on a date.

Black Butte Porter (for you Euro's.. that's pronounced "bute or beaut" not "butt") is a local beer that is somewhat generic of a porter.  Not too nutty.. nor is it chocolatty... its just plain good.  The downside is that I don't really like to drink much of it and it doesn't go well with food.  It also makes me do things later that makes my wife say "go outside if you have to do that!".  But, if you want a very good go-to porter... it will always be at every bar in the area.

Widmere is another local brewery.  Their Hefeweisen got most people in Oregon turned on to Micro-Brewery beers.  Its cloudy appearance draws alot of looks and comments from those around... but it also gets their attention.  Throw a slice of lemon in there and it is quite good.  This one I enjoy to drink with any beef selection.  Something about combining a wheet beer with beef that really hits the spot for me.  Its a close second to a decent merlot.

So.. lets hear about other people's experience with tasty beer.

Alaskan Amber Ale eating Dungeness crab at the Crab Shack at Dungeness WA.

Anchor Steam at the Fog City dinner after being in wine country for a week drinking nothing but wine.

At the Free State Brewing Co in Lawrence Ks drinking a 1/2 lemonade 1/2 wheat beer after mountain biking all day in July.

Working cattle all day, that first luke warm Coors tastes like heaven.

and who can forget,

Bridgeport Brewing Co.
"Great Firkin Beer"

Dont get me started on Wine, I will get nothing done at work today,

Like dad said,

Lifes to short to drink bad beer, bad wine, or bad coffe.

As far as beers tied to occasions go, Stuttgarter Hofbrau will always have a warm place in my heart. It was the beer of choice at most of the fests I went to while living in Germany. Nothing quite compares to a good German fest, whether it be a bier fest, wine fest, or Oktoberfest. Drinking a good beer with a crowd of folks from all walks of live,  and all ages while having a hell of a good time just can't be beat.

My favorite beer is Paulaner Hefeweizen served only slightly chilled. Only wish I could get it on tap   Btw, hefeweizen shouldn't be served with lemon. The citrus oils kill the head, and ruin some of the flavor. Lemon is best served with a kristallweizen.

I think its the situation or location more than the beer itself.

At home, during the winter months, its Guinness and Bass Ale.

Growing up, working on my family's farm in Kansas, I'm with Milo, it was and is Coors.

Over the past few years, I travel to Asia many times a year so, when I'm in China visiting factories and having dinner its Tsing Tao (I really like this one for some reason, but I think it's because of the locale).

When back in Hong Kong, it depends on where I'm dining....German Food, German Beer, and so on, although I'll drink San Miguel.  But I always stop in at Ned Kelly's Last Stand off Nathan Road for a pint of Fosters.

Hehe, I got beer of the month for XMas, now that's a way for a girl to get my undivided attention.  It's hard for me to find a beer I really dislike, short of the fad fruit-flavored nonsense a few microbreweries came up with.

Guinness is great when I want to sit down and savor a beer for a while (Dowding, the cold guinness fad still going on in UK?  Was funny to see all the signs "Cold Guiness Here!" while I was over there a year or two ago, after hearing from my old brit roomie how much we yanks were sissies who couldn't handle warm beer  ), otherwise I tend to favor a medium weight beer.  Amber lagers pretty good, ciders a bit sweet for my taste but not bad, but as long as it's not some rasberry special I'm not going to refuse anything you put in front of me.

LOL!  And what's wrong with killing some of the head on a carbonated beer?  Come on... wheat beer head is nothing like Guinness.  One is good.. the other makes you burp

I do have to side with those anti-fruit beer comments above.  A Californian thought this up.. I'm sure of it.

As for Japanese beers... I was drinking an Asahi Dark and talking with my cohort in corperate crime when something began to grate on me.  I'd take a sip of the dark beer and get a perplexed look on my face.  When asked what was wrong, I said "I don't know.. the beer tastes good, but something is missing."  Then it dawned on me.  No aftertaste.  Zero.  Nadda.  The taste disappeared as soon as the beer was gone.  At that point I decided the Japanese were just too precise to make a good beer

Fatty - I think it's still pretty much a continuing fad over here. Cold guiness, my arse.   Warm beer is good on a cold winters evening, whereas I drink cold lager in summer.

I don't really like Guiness; it turns your s**t black for a start. And it's quite pricey.

Newcastle Brown ale was all I drunk for a while (I studied up there for 4 years), but I had a bad episode with it and haven't touched it since. It still sends shivers down my spine. I was arrested for urinating in an alleyway, which was unfortunately right next to the police station. I was a little worse for wear, but got a cooked breakfast after a night in the cells, which was nice. Still haven't told my parents.

It's a very dark, strong tasting brew - god knows what's in it.

I like John Smith's stuff, because it's cheap. Samuel Smith's stuff is even better, but not as available.

French and Belgian lager is nice (Stella Artois is tres bon), especially on a hot summers day watching the cricket. Having said that, I've got 4 crates of the stuff in my garage, and it's snowing outside.

OK, you knew I would pipe into this subject ("Sudz", after all).

First off, I completely agree with DejaVu - it's all about the scene when you drink the beer.  Any party-er knows that beer is an accessory: who's there? who's having a good time? what women are there?

That said, on a purely taste basis I'd have to go with homebrew.  Granted, I haven't been on a pilgrimage to Oktoberfest (tho I will), I feel that fresh brew is always the best.

A corollary would be that you can judge the best bread on the shelf, but the loaf that you do at home always tastes better.  My favorite - Sudz's Hellfire AH con beer.  Poured like a genuine pilsner, smooth tasting - not too bitter, and got you drunk.

1.  Any cold Canadian beer

2.  Any Canadian beer.

3.  Warm piss.

4.  Weakass American beer that Fatty likes.

The best beer I ever had was when I was 18.  Was woking for a pipeline company then and the foreman bought a cooler of beer and filled it with ice.  That beer was so cold it hurt my teeth.
Good beer is cold beer..........
